GTA IV Steam ICEnhancer Mod Guide

So you've seen the amazing videos of Grand Theft Auto IV running the ICEnhancer mod and you want your Steam version to look the same. Unfortunately it's not as easy as copy and paste, however we've got you covered. Join us on our video tutorial which will guide you through downgrading your installation, enabling mods and finally making the game look better than ever.

Get the Adobe Flash Player to see this video.

Our comparison of standard graphics and iCEnhancer 1.25 goodness!

Files You Will Need

1) ICEnhancer 1.25 (101.63mb)
2) GTA Patch 1.0.4.0 (54.63mb)
3) Rockstar Social Group Tool (2.8mb)
4) Xlive.dll (83kb)

Step 1 - Disable Automatic Updates: To allow modding we need to downgrade the installation to version 1.0.4.0. Steam will always try to keep GTA IV at the latest version so you need to open up Steam, right click on Grand Theft Auto IV and open the properties page. From here go to the Updates tabs and disable the automatic updates.

Step 2 - Backup: It's important to constantly backup your GTA IV folders while installing mods, otherwise you could lose your installation completely. So before we do anything let's go into your Steam folders and take a copy of the files.

X:\Steam\steamapps\common - Replacing X: with your appropriate drive letter take a copy of the folder titled Grand Theft Auto IV and paste it somewhere else. I would recommend you rename it to Grand Theft Auto IV - Clean as you may need a fresh install at some point if things go wrong.

Step 3 - Downgrade To 1.0.4.0: So most GTA IV mods out there support version 1.0.4.0 so we're going to downgrade your installation. Simply run the patch you downloaded earlier and it will downgrade your GTA to the correct version.

Step 4 - Rename Folder: This is VERY IMPORTANT!. If you don't do this next step you WILL need to restart the whole process. Navigate to X:\Steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto IV and rename the folder that is currently called GTAIV to something like GTAIVold.

Get the Adobe Flash Player to see this video.

Follow our handy video tutorial

Step 5 - Run Rockstar Social Group Tool: Run the Rockstar Social Group Tool that we downloaded earlier. This will create a new folder inside of X:\Steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto IV called GTAIV. Open that folder up and select all the files and copy them to your renamed GTAIVold folder. Overwrite any files it asks you about. Now delete the GTAIV folder created by the Social Group tool and rename your GTAIVold folder to GTAIV.

Step 6 - Copy Xlive.dll: Now this is really easy. Simply unzip and copy the Xlive.dll file to X:\Steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto IV\GTAIV

Step 7 - Install ICEnhancer 1.25: So unzip the ICEnhancer files we downloaded and there will be three folders. You need to open up the 1.0.4.0 folder and simply copy and paste all the files into X:\Steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto IV\GTAIV. It will ask you to overwrite some files and then you'll be good to go.

Now when you launch GTAIV you should have a white ICEnhancer version appear in the top left hand corner as the game loads up. Jump into the game and you'll be treated to some amazing graphics. Now you can mod the game completely with new texture packs, cars, weapon sounds and more.

Should be fairly easy for you guys but if you have any issues let me know. I have heard of some weird issues where the text in the menus won't show up. I didn't have that problem but if you do let me know, I have a few fixes in store ;)
Also if your running a geforce card beware this mod will fry the thing! Make sure you have sufficient cooling for it. My 480 goes nuts when this mod is installed.

Pretty average mod though, at the moment i find it too bright in places plus you have to be careful with the installation cause the menus can mess up.

Follow the readme it is in more detail than this guide.
It makes outdoor environments look pretty good, but close ups on people look over exposed to me.

Not great.
There are a number of tweaked ICEnhancer configs out there that mess around with the saturation and contrasts apparently, I haven't tried them just yet.

Agree, its got a long way to go before i would use it on a permanent basis.
Plus it only really excells once you have all the added textures, vehicles etc installed to really show it off.

As is id suggest anyone to hold off on going through the lengthy install process till theres further improvements, maybe even a full mod with everything included.

Plus if your geforce isn't sufficiently cooled and im not talking about some case fan pointing at it then just forget it this will fry the damn thing due to some .dll it uses
Yeah they really need to make a "mod-pack" that includes all the cars with the tree and texture packs that he's been using in the trailers, then this mod will be worth it.

I was running it on my 460GTX with no heating issues at all, but I am a little weary about using it flat out.

I think I have the same cards as you and this game used punish them for no reason without the mods.

The GTX480s get a crap load hotter than any other card in the 400 range.

Yeah you do, after all my bitching about the GTX480, Overclockers.co.uk were selling them for £200 a piece so i nabbed one! I only have one though.

With GTA4 i have no problems running it full spec without mods but install this and it throws a fit, i mean it runs it smoothly but the noise! I haven't run this for longer than 10 minutes lol, not worth it.
Any of you guys had any problems with xlive.dll and the menu?

I patched to 1.0.4.0 and did the RCSC thing and the menu works...

But after I add xlive.dll to the GTA IV directory, menus stop working. there invisible. I've deleted and reinstalled a few times but still isn't working :@

One of the many hiccups of installing this mod im afraid, same thing happened to me.
So are you still without menus?

I didnt add the iEnhancer until just before. cars do look better but i dont like the surroundings. I think i'll go back to stock textures ;)

^_^
Yeah i never beat the menu thing so gave up and went back to stock features.

Theres still a lot of work to be done on this mod.
yea.

i dont really care about the mod though. i'll probably remove it sometime tonight

i just want that xlive to work properly >_>

EDIT:

vehicles and xlive.dll work on 1.0.7 :O

lets keel teh vid GTA IV Steam iCEnhancer Mod Guide
Just wont work for me! Tried 6 times now every time it just crashes on start-up. The game does start in 1.0.0.4 after downgrading though. Just after I install the mod it crashes. Help?
Did you install xlive?

This mod works on 1.0.7.0 aswell so try that aswell.
I followed every step in this tutorial but only ended up with a steam error: This game is currently unavailable. Please try again another time.
Any idea what caused this? The game was working fine before I installed the mod, and now I cannot even open it. Help would be appreciated :)
Tried doing it again, removing the moded file and starting over again with the clean one. This time I could open the game, but end up with another error message: "GTA IV FATAL ERROR: Invalid resource detected - Please re-install the game" The error code is: SHFX20.
I am guessing I should re-install the game, but is there not a big chance I will end up with the same problem again if I try to mod it? The only reason why I want to play GTA IV again is to try out the mod to be frank.
Lol.

Somebody is pissed off =D

@Mik3y pls help this angry person =D [MOG]
