I’ve murdered lots of men, but I don’t know why

I’ve murdered a lot of people in my gaming career, but I can’t for the life of me remember why. There was probably a man in a suit shooting at me, so I returned fire without haste; or perhaps the soviets are trying to end the world, so we better kill them all.

I’m not surprised that I can’t remember why I was murdering thousands of people in games last year. I have a rubbish memory as it is, and with so many new games coming across my desk, every FPS merges into an incoherent blur. I’m forever confusing the one where you kill lots of people with the other one where you kill many soldiers.

Now it’s gone beyond that. I went back to Uncharted 3 last night. Apparently I haven’t finished it, and only got up to Chapter 7 (whatever). After figuring out why I was dangling mid-building, some men starting firing at me, so I promptly returned the welcome around the genital region. It wasn’t where I intended to aim, I just needed to reaffirm myself with the precision of the controls.

After a rather lengthy cut-scene and some more pointless slaughtering, I thought I was finally about to solve a puzzle. Only, solve turned out to be the wrong word.

”Start” a puzzle would be a better way to put it, as I was going to have to kill a great many more clones before getting anywhere near the solution. As soon as Drake made any semblance of forward progress, a group of like-minded lackeys conveniently stumbled upon his location and the bodies of hundreds of their fallen comrades. Luckily, they had somehow concealed sniper-riffles and rocket-launchers in their pristine Armani jackets, so there was no chance of easy escape.

This continued for quite some time, intervened only by the advancement of the story through cut-scene. Although, it still hasn’t explained why all these Barney Stinsons are trying to kill me. I haven’t played since December, I can’t remember, and for such a strong narrative, it hasn’t done a very good job of explaining why Nathan Drake is a coldblooded killer.

I’m going to finish it tonight, but I already have a massive case of murder fatigue. I just want to finish some of these puzzles and get to the bottom of a once gripping story. The action is fun, but I’ve reached a point in gaming where I want to do something other than pointlessly shoot minions. There’s almost no reward and even less satisfaction for shooting people, and I rarely feel like the serial killer I am.

Run into Max Payne? You know you dead.

Every protagonist is a serial killer these days. Even Link in his cute little green hat kills hundreds of adversaries without as much as second thought.

I can’t wait to get started on Max Payne 3, especially after claims of the best story ever told in a shooter. However, achievements like “1000 kills” put me off a little. Aside from mindlessly killing too many people over the years, unrealistic murdering will be to the detriment of strong narratives in video games. Engrossing story lines can only go so far before we wake up thinking, “wait a minute, perhaps the realism with which my average protagonist just slaughtered 1500 bad guys isn’t that realistic at all”.

I’m not saying that video games should have a realistic body count. A total of three in an eight hour experience wouldn’t be all that much fun. I’m just tired of killing hundreds of enemies because I can, with little reason as to why.

Thats why it's nice to play something completely different... Like portal
Having recently played Uncharted 3, I completely agree. The body count in that game is insane, and considering he is a relic hunter that is questioning his intentions throughout the game, it is even more insane.

Too many filler scenes wiping out 20 or 30 suits. Then they have a cut scene to tell the story and make it all feel worth while. Playing with our minds using a cleverly manufactured film-esque format.
Duh it's pretty obvious why you are killing them...

They are bad guys. Any one who is not you is bad :D
Guns don't kill people.

I Do.
The Call of Duty graveyards must be massive...
I guess most game developers figure we all just go with the reasoning that you kill out of 'self-defense'. Bad guy wants to stop you, sends his goons to kill you; What choice do you have but to retaliate? After all, they're just polygons covered in textures, made to look like human beings who are trying to make you respawn and have to do half the level again.

It comes down to the setting up of the characters, narratively speaking, and your feelings for them, whether good or bad. In films like Independence Day, for instance, you've got a whole city being blown up and hundreds of thousands being wiped out instantly. But hey, who cares, the explosions are awesome. But then you get a main character who you've come to love or hate for one reason or another, like that guy Russell who sacrifices himself to destroy the mothership, and everybody gets all teary all of a sudden.

If at the end of a game like Uncharted 3 it showed the wives and children of all the guys that Drake killed mourning their deaths, you'd start to feel bad, because then you've been given a little bit of a background to those characters, which then gives them a certain "human element" that we all respect in one another here in the real world.

It's an unavoidable problem with video games such as these, but in the end we've all just got to realize that it's just a game.

Play some Animal Crossing to even it out.
I was the same, then I started playing Minecraft and was introduced to creatures called Creepers who like to destroy my creations. I say their deaths are justified [Shifty]

You go into a game with morality in mind. In games where a lot of shooting takes place, of course you're gonna have to kill and kill. If you don't, you'll die, rage, and end up making an article about the top 10 worst ways you can die. I'm not sure if you're dissatisfied with the aim and shoot style of killing that many virtual lives or you're wanting something more gruesome.

Yeah, I admit it can be pretty repetitive running around and then coming across an open field where you'll know a firefight's about to break about. Hence, you take a break from it all and play something with a completely different pace. Considering you have such a backlog of games, it wouldn't hurt to dig through it to find something a little less murderous.

I've always had qualms with killing/fighting females, especially when they're easy on the eyes.

With shooters, I ignore the morality, generally. Apart from Red Dead Redemption. There, I always wanted to play the good guy. John seemed badass but he had a definite soft side, and the characters in that game weren't all 2D npcs. Rockstart put a lot of work to make it feel like a real world, I think they did damn well. Each npc you meet and talk with had some character within them and none of them really annoyed me when they weren't supposed to. Unlike Fallout/Elder scrolls which had npcs who some of them drove me nuts but I didn't touch them because I cba paying up etc.

But yeah, Red Dead Redemption is a game where I think most people can feel justified in shooting someone or not.
