Resident Evil: Retribution Review

I think it's worth prefacing this review with this; I like the previous Resident Evil films. I saw the first three when I was reasonably young, and I thought the fourth one was a lot of fun, albeit a guilty pleasure. So just know that all of this is coming from someone who really wanted to enjoy this film. I did not. At all.

Resident Evil: Retribution is hands down the worst film in the series. If you like the games, or the movies, avoid this film. Retribution feels more like a video game than any of the other films, but more in the sense of a multi-player mode rather than an actual campaign with a story. There is basically no story. It's set entirely inside of a underwater complex with various different rooms, each with different generated scenarios.

The film also acts as a best-of, as they fill the screen with familiar faces. None of these are the characters you knew though. They are all clones. What's interesting about Michelle Rodriguez's character being a cloned bad guy? Absolutely nothing. The only likeable character in the whole movie is a clone of Michelle Rodriguez that is a civilian. It's because she is a normal person. How are we supposed to relate to Milla Jovovich as Alice by now. She walks around practically expressionless shooting CGI monsters.

Also, be warned any fan of the games. Leon is in this. His role in the squad is the unlikeable guy who does and says dumb things that you want to die. They went beyond ruining his character. He is completely unlikeable.

Normally everything above can sometimes be brushed off and forgiven if the special effects and action are good enough to warrant the ticket price. However, Retribution features some of the most poorly shot action sequences I've ever seen. Early on in the film, Alice fights a horde of zombies inside of a CGI white hallway. The slow-motion and then ramping of speed became immediately tiresome, and the choreography was uninspired, and completely boring. This happens scene after scene, and then you start wondering why you are sitting in the theatre, watching an action movie where you want them to stop the godawful fighting, just because hearing the horrendous dialogue is less painful.

I struggled to find something to like about Retribution, but if there was one thing it's definitely the music. It felt like old school electro mixed with dubstep. There were one or two shots that looked visually spectacular too.

Bottom-line is, don't see this movie. Even if you liked the last films, this one isn't worth the watch. The acting is horrible, the action is boring and the plot is absent. You could easily skip over this one and go straight to the sixth. Oh, and yes, it looks like there will be a sixth...

i was really hoping this one who be the best out of all 5
Pretty much the whole movie exists to get Alice her powers. Definitely absent of plot.

I did enjoy the action though and the OTT gore. The hallway fight scene at the beginning was fantastic. And the homages to Dawn of the Dead and Dead Snow were much appreciated by me.

I'd give it a 3, fans of the first 4 will enjoy it but it doesn't really add much.

Bring on the 6th!!
You LIKED that hallway fight?
That was the worst chunk IMO.
Naw :-(
I appreciate people liking the series.

But as a Resident Evil fan, I have long lost that tiny ounce of like for this. He murdered a series and now he's nailing the coffin. Again.

I just wish he would stop using the Resident Evil names, damn you crapcom for selling out! [Rage]
Mr Anderson needs to put us all out of our misery and give up the Resident Evil franchise to someone more competent. I hear talks he wants the Castlevania license, please no!

My original comment coming into this review was gonna be that no matter what i'd give it a 1 star but doesn't look like i need to great review!

Compare it to how poorly choreographed the fight scenes were in the last film and they look perfect lol :P

Kevin Durand (as Barry Burton) was completely wasted. Had like 2 lines of dialogue. Poor form.
Yeah, he was probably the biggest new cast member.
Who the **** played Leon. Some Game of Thrones Kingslayer look alike who couldn't deliver a single line well...

And to think he got the job over Jenson Ackles [Facepalm]
Wonder what 'ResiEvilFan' would say to this? I've seen all the previous films, and all are progressly worse as it goes along.
I'm seeing this movie regardless of reviews I read. I like Resident Evil!

I'm usually quite picky about what I see, but I like switching off every now and then and watching zombies and blood and guns and explosions and milla jovovich. [MOG]
I'm with ya @Maxiboy everyone has their own opinion and regardless of how "Crap" this one was I'd still love to see this in the movies.
If you think you'll enjoy it, I'm happy that you'll support the industry and go see it.

Especially this time of year!
Was going to see it tonight but now I dunno...... :S
IGN guy didn't mind it.

Oh noooo, sad to hear that you didn't enjoy it Shiversul! I loved the first 4 movies (even the last one, but that may be because Wentworth Miller was in it) and was excited about this one. We'd still see it though, but at least our expectations are lowered and perhaps we'll enjoy it more.

There is a rumour going around the net that Sony put certain reviewers in the film, as extras or minor roles, to boost the review scores.

I know the Joblo writer was in the film but I haven't read his review yet.

If it is true, surely IGN would be at the top of their list.
I ended up seeing it last night, would give it a 2/5.
Will you guys stop giving this series ticket sales [Rage]

I don't want more Paul.W.Anderson Resident Evil movies :'@
No more Milla Jovovich [Rage]
I want them to reboot it in a few years and get it right.

Collider dude practically sucked Anderson's dick in the interview.
"I think this is the best one yet" etc etc,.
UGH.
Saw this today, not bad, prolly 2.5/5

Yes we will keep seeing them

Saw it last night and I would have to say its the best 3D film I have seen in a long time. the first 5 minutes just blew me away on how small little details.

Yes the movie itself wasn't all that live changing and it did feel more than Game than a movie.

Since there into there fifth film it gets harder and harder to impress the fans. There's so much you can do to a film to make it feel fresh, heck Avatar wasnt all that as well.

Milla Jovovich is probably one of my favorite female actresses and in no doubt she makes the Resident Evil movies work. I cant think of any better actresses to play that roll.

Personally If you love a good 3D movie with some Zombies go see it. As mentioned its not the best film out there but its better than most. Bait 3D anyone :P
I really feel like you didn't read the review when you say "it's not life changing."

My standard for this movie was fun. That was it. I had fun with the last films but none with this one.

And the 3D was barely non existent.

And it being the 5th film in the franchise is no excuse to be shit. They've run out of plot, and it shows.
just went to see it, and i wasn't too bad, sure the story line lacked a fair bit out of all other, but overall I enjoyed it, its action scenes, gore, and characters were pretty cool.

I read your review and agree with some things you had to say about it and disagreed on others.

I personally think the 3D was still good and its not the 90's where 3D has to be popping out at you but to create a dept of environment of the character and its surroundings which I think RE did well.

On the other note whats next in the cinema

Well...I thought it looked good tard but I ain't gonna waste a dime on this.
I thought the 3D was actually pretty awful :S
I didn't even see it in 3D, **** that noise.
I'm disappointed to hear about this one being shit, but I was expecting it. The first Resident Evil (2002) movie was actually quite good, and focused more on the horror and tense atmosphere then the sequels. After that, it's gotten crapper and crapper.
I completely forgot that I saw it in 3D. It was basically non-existent.
Yeah, and when it was existent, it was mostly just tacky 'pop out' 3D.
I'll more than likely see this once its 'released' to the internet.

I really disliked the last movie so I'm not wasting time driving to a cinema for this one.
Ha ha. I misread the title and thought I was getting a VERY late Resistance Retribution review. Lol ;O As for the Resident Evil films, I think they have all been mediocre at best. Still I watched them all and I'll eventually watch this. I wouldn't bother going to the cinema tho. I'll wait for a Blu ray release.
^Actually laughed :P
