Borderlands 2: Let's talk about Krieg the Psycho

First off, he's the latest vault hunter to be added to the roster on what is fast becoming the sleeper hit of the past few years, Borderlands 2. At least it is for me. The first time I played it, I thoroughly enjoyed it, but was neck-deep in Skyrim, Dark Souls, Max Payne 3, and numerous other big releases. But Borderlands 2 is proving to have a ridiculous amount of staying power; regular, meaty DLC, and a stupendous degree of deployability. I'm about to clock three hundred hours, and I still can't get enough of Pandora.

For those of you not yet sold on Borderlands 2, let me quickly sell you on it. Take equal parts of Mad Max, Firefly and Halo, dump in a liberal helping of obscene humor, and douse in thousands of pop-culture references. Shake violently and drink as fast as you can. That's Borderlands 2; a funny, violent, sassy, profound and addictive first person shooter slash role playing game with excellent co-op.

What I really want to tall about, however, is Krieg. Every vault hunter has a backstory, as relayed through a series of echo recordings, and if you search for them on youtube you can listen to them all without having to search for them. Gaige, the Mechromancer, the first DLC-based vault hunter, has been out for ages, and people have figured out her scant backstory already. But Krieg is far more interesting for several reasons.

First off, here's the video that teased his release:

It doesn't give away much, other than the fact that Krieg was experimented on. Which isn't all that remarkable, until you listen to this echo recording.

The implications here are as follows:

  • Subject #524 and #525 are being experimented on, and are (very likely) Tiny Tina's parents. Tina was present during said experiment, was prompted to throw a grenade, and escape.
  • Eridium was used in said experiments, and eridium is very likely what turns psychos into badass psychos.
  • That Krieg is Tiny Tina's father.

This final point is one I feel pretty strongly about, though I still need more evidence on who Krieg USED to be. The great thing about Krieg is his dialogue; amidst streams of utterly foul and incredibly colourful violent ramblings, a second voice kicks in. A sane voice. Take, for example, this exchange between the inner voice (in brackets) and the insane outer voice. It takes place if you stand still for too long.

The Krieg the Psycho DLC is a must-play, and is available for download right now.

(If you ever kill an innocent person, I will destroy us.) Shut UP!! (No. That's the deal. You can kill as many of the deserving as you like, but the second your axe touches the flesh of an innocent, I'll end this. All of it. A razor to the veins, just like that fugitive we tried to grab on Hera, remember?) Nnnnngh, get out of my head!! (...I'll take that as a 'yes.')

And now, take what Krieg's Bruce Banner voice says when you kill Hyperion troops (Hyperion being the guys who work for Jack, who experimented on Krieg).

(Yes, make them pay for what they did to us...)

And finally, a line that the inner voice utters once in a while. This is the clincher for me.

(Where is she? Is she still alive? Did she get away?)

The 'she' in that line is, in my opinion, Tina. The developers have stated that Krieg used to be a bandit turned vault hunter, and it makes him such an incredibly compelling character if you look at the clues that are strewn about the place. 2K have said that as it's not possible to insert new echo recorders into the game detailing his backstory, they'll be releasing a video soon to help clear up exactly who and what Krieg is. When that happens, this theory could be shot violently out of the water, but for now it's making playing Krieg twice as fun.

The Krieg the Psycho DLC is a must-play, and is available for download right now.

Great read.

I still need to finish the last two DLCS that have been released for Borderlands 2. I just hate how everything turns into a back log these days game wise.

As I said though AWESOME read. I cannot wait to get around to this addition!
dont where you get the similarities between Halo and this great game but each to there own,

great read though and it is a truly great game
I guess it might be time to get some of the DLC. This looks really compelling.
Not that it needs to be said again, but Krieg is NOT Tina's father. Gearbox has stated that he is not. It is unknown if #524 or #525 is the father, but if you listen to the recording a test subject is being experimented on as they are talking. In recording 3 you hear #525 say "don't look" and in recording 4 you hear Tina cry out "Mommy!" as the sounds of experimentation are still going on. So we can conclude that the mother was the one being experimented on and both # 524 and #525 have some connection to Tina. #525 is most likely the Father and the other one is either a very sympathetic person to refer to Tina as "sweet heart" in a manner to try and comfort her or is someone who knows her like a neighbor or family friend. Chances are it was a group all from the same town/village that Fleshstick wrangled up.
