RIP: Skyrim is dead

SKYRIM IS DEAD.

Bethesda have announced that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will no longer be receiving any new content. They will instead be furrowing their brows and peeing as much of themselves into the tepid birdbath that is The Elder Scrolls Online, an upcoming MMORPG which has many people ... sighing?

I've yet to see anyone punching the air and cheering over the transition of the Elder Scrolls series from yawning, epic, operatic single player experience to what will, in all likelihood, be another WOW clone.

The news that Bethesda are cutting us off will not, for PC users anyway, signal the death-knell for new content. Modders, specifically those over at Skyrim Nexus, will spend years and years crafting gorgeous, expansive swathes of new content, ranging from the profound to the profoundly stupid. As it stands right now, you can live aboard a stunningly rendered Dwemer airship, traipse through forests of trees that puncture the clouds, and pepper the streets of Markarth with hundreds of exploding chickens. Modders won't abandon the game anytime soon, and I hope you won't either.

I've yet to see anyone punching the air and cheering over the transition of the Elder Scrolls series from yawning, epic, operatic single player experience to what will, in all likelihood, be another WOW clone.

But the decision by Bethesda to stop after releasing only three downloadable chunks of goodness is a legitimate bummer. People slanted on Dawnguard, but I thought it was fantastic; I played both as a Dawnguard and a Vampire Lord on different tons of mine, and gave it a glowing review. Hearthfire was truly weird, in that it fused the fantastical wonderment of Skyrim with the fiddly DIY of Grand Designs, but come on. How bold is that? Letting bulked-up heroes with thousands of kills under their belts hang up their swords and design their own homes?

I spent a solid week on Hearthfire, and I don't regret a minute of it. Well, maybe the part where I cancelled a real-life party because I was 'sick', then became disgusted with myself three hours later, whilst buying glass for the windows in my adopted kid's bedrooms, at around the same time that my friends were doing shots several suburbs away.

Dragonborn was good, but felt a tad rushed. The main story was good, but the DLC as a whole required you explore and complete every side quest to really feel the impact of the new narrative. But to hear that Bethesda are pulling the plug and leaving Skyrim alone? It's sort of heartbreaking. There was so much more of the story to tell!

Heading back to see the husk of the Empire, now under the thumb of the Thalmor. Delving deeper into the mysteries of the Psijic Order. Perhaps even travelling to Elsweyr, the home of the Khajiit. These are places and groups that I'm sure TES Online will deal with, but it won't be the same. MMOs fee inherently redundant, at least to me; maybe it's because I've pumped hundreds of hours into many of them, but The Elder Scrolls seems like it deserves more.

This move by Bethesda isn't going to throw me into the fits of a tantrum, but I won't like. I am considering sending them a Howler.

How about you? What did you want to see in terms of single player DLC for Skyrim? And are you freaked out about Elder Scrolls Online, or will you be playing the hell out of it?

I'm interested to see what they do with Online.

It's an awesome idea, really. How many time did you wish you could team up with mates in Skyrim!

But I hope it doesn't come at the expense of detail. Elder Scrolls needs a pretty face.
No news for a new Fallout game ...

Seriously , they should just ditch TES Online and make a new Fallout. [Rage]
I love Elder Scrolls, but won't be playing Online.
I have never played Skyrim. True story!
Maybe there should've been a poll at the bottom of the article instead of the question, cause I definitely won't be playing The Elder Scrolls Online.

I kinda hope it bombs and they understand what we all want.

I remember them promising us more expansive DLC than that found in Oblivion and to be honest i feel let down i was expecting at least one more big DLC, sucks really. :'(
My days of MMORPG's is over so I won't be picking it up. However I never really got that into Skyrim hugely because I got bored of grinding out boring quests.
I agree with everything stated in the article, beside giving up on Skyrim DLC. If you want your voice be heard by Bethesda go to the Skyrim DLC Petition at: www.change.org/...

Read it, sign the petition and I will automatically send emails to Bethesda on your behalf.

I think they're pretty set on moving on.

Bethesda's challenge now is to get all the Skyrim console players onto PC...
Wouldn't call it "dead" just yet. A dead game to me would be no online server support at all, kinda like what they did to Grid :(
I've never played this game, I was going to give it a crack but just doesn't seem to by my style of game.

The amount of 'fun' you can have in Skyrim is pretty subjective. I hated it but still think that Morrowind and Oblivion are alright.
I don't know why you're so cut up, Bethesda does this to all of its RPGs, they all reach the point where the last DLC is released and patched enough, then the development team moves onto the new game.
I'm only cut up because they're not moving on to a new title, they're moving on to a new MMO. And the MMO, in my opinion, is a dead end. A gaming development cul-de-sac. Even the good ones die off.
You can't call Skyrim dead when it still has awesome modders on skyrim nexus and steam
Death to all MMOs, where human brains go to die.

WELL SAID, sir :)
Skyrim may not be getting any more official DLC but the modding community is still hard at work and there is some decent stuff out there, far from dead.
But yeah bring me Fallout 4!
I'll try Online, maybe. I don't really want to get sucked into something like that, though, I spent enough time in Skyrim. I can only imagine what would happen to me in a larger world with more interactivity...
Online won't kill the franchise, it just means everything will descend into a chaotic free-for-all, which some people dig... Not me, though.
I had to create an account simply to defend Bethesda.

HOLY SHIT. This article is full of ignorance. People need to realize that Bethesda the DEVELOPER has nothing to do with Elder Scrolls Online and their desire to stop producing content for Skyrim does not in anyway whatsoever mean they are doing it to work on ESO.

Elder Scrolls Online is being developed by Zenimax Studios and produced by Bethesda.

Bethesda is no doubt starting on Fallout 4 now or maybe another Elder scrolls SINGLE PLAYER GAME.

DAMNIT PEOPLE. That article needs to be removed.

Bethesda the developer - TES single player franchise/Fallout franchise

Zenimax Studios - TES:Online

No franchise is getting killed. No matter WHAT HAPPENS with Elder Scrolls Online it will have ZERO impact on the single player Elder Scrolls experience we all know and love.

GET IT RIGHT PEOPLE. =_= =_= =_=

What's your point? Three facepalms mean nothing...

Nothing I said was false.

Bethesda Games Studios are not stopping Skyrim content to work on ESO.

Your turn. :D

Oh you...
Sick of the generic fantasy world of The Elder Scrolls games. I hope they're getting on with a new Fallout.
