That's how I took it. I grew up in Cairns with my dad's side of the family and a lot of them worked in the tourism industry. Everything from barrier reef cruises to rainforest tours and wildlife park work.

I've heard countless stories of tourists not taking warnings seriously and ending up maimed or dead from simplest things: drowning, sun/heat related injuries or the local flora and fauna.

The biggest danger to the tourists though, are the locals themselves. The (bad) tourists have no respect for the place itself, they defecate on the streets, start drunken fights with the locals and generally think they own the joint once they get there. The few nice tourists they get doesn't clean the slate. Locals don't take too kindly to walking through poo to serve some hung-over tourist their coffee first thing in the morning.

That was what Cairns was like about 2 decades ago, not exactly too sure how it is now. But when I visited last year, it seemed to be much of the same.

Yeah I hear you on that.

I've been on the Gold Coast for about 10 years now and I find most of the tourists to be fine but of course you always get the exception. To be honest, I find most of the over seas visitors to be lovely. Very polite and courteous and I find its actually the Australians that visit from down south that tend to have the major issues. Indeed, fighting with locals, getting drunk, sleeping on the beach, doing drugs and freaking out. But saying that this happens most weekends with the people that are coming down from Brisbane and it also happens when any major GC event is taking place- ie. Schoolies, GC 600, Summer holidays in general.

Indeed I think the article is to just give the visitor an idea of what can happen and what has happened in the past. I think if anything it is saying "Listen to your dive instructor, listen to the rules, don't assume anything, take what you are doing seriously"

Like the Japanese tourists here, don't assume just because the beach has life guards they will be able to help you. Don't assume because small kids are playing by the water it is safe ( only a meter or two out and there are some awful under currents that will pull you to your death) Be mindful, be responsible for the activity you are about to partake in. Make the right choice for you. Don't drink and swim, or swim at night, or alone.... and yeah I guess that goes for the Diving as well. Don't assume they will count all the suits (Even though they are supposed to- human error is bound to happen sometimes) don't assume your buddy is always watching you... etc
Yeah, you're dead on the money there. It's the Aussie tourists who are the worst. Like they have a sense of entitlement to piss over everything.

There are a lot of Japanese tourists in Cairns but they are very respectful for the most part. I have no problems bearing with their terribly broken English to give them directions. :P
^_^Engrish (love) I love it.

I found a lost one a while back, poor thing could barely tell me where she needed to be.

Yeah, some just click into holiday mode and become total foul pigs. It's probably the worst here when we have Indy (Gold Coast 600) they start drinking at 9am and don't stop. Put that together with car racing, half naked women and SUPER hot weather and you have a lovely mix @_@
