Pre-Orders and You

I just got into a healthy (non-violent) discussion with a few others at MMGN HQ about video game pre-orders.

I often find myself pre-ordering more out of excitement, rather than a fear of missing out on a game at launch. I guess it's kind of like me saying, "I really like your game/franchise, so take my money early!"

I probably only pre-order once or twice a year though, if that, maybe 2-3 months before a release (at most).

Although, I've never pre-ordered online: only at retail stores, but online pre-ordering is something I'll probably do in future if the incentives are good enough.

So I ask you, my fellow MMGN'ers!:

How many games a year do you pre-order?
Is it always the same sort of game/same franchise, or random games you think look good?
Have you ever pre-ordered a game online before?
And when you do pre-order, how long before release do you do it?
lawl I pre-order anything. [MOG]

I sometimes pre order only usually for big releases like say, hmm Star Craft2, hahaha had that on pre order for 2 years before a release date was even known.

I have also pre ordered online and I tend to do so much more these days as the store I shop at sells out quite swiftly if you do not. But mostly unless something very unique is offered with a pre order or if like I said I can get a cheaper price I tend to not worry so much.
LAWL what's the internet for then?
I pre-order if I get good shit with it. [MOG]
Very rare I find myself pre-ordering anything, I used to do it occasionally with a few exclusives that I was excited about, after that I only pre-ordered if there was ab incentive. The last game I pre-ordered was DKR for the Wii, I was happy to wait for that game but Game offered a free plush toy with any pre-orders for that game. Since then I haven't pre-ordered anything I didn't even bother with Mass Effect 3 and that was one game I was stupidly excited about.
So from no on if there's no decent incentive I'm not going to bother, I seriously doubt that any game these days will be so popular that it will have all copies sold out.
The only thing I can see my self pre-ordering in the future is the Wii U, I tend to pre-order all Nintendo consoles for some reason. Something about the next generation Nintendo console that gets me excited enough to want to get the new system on day one with no chance of missing out. That's the one exception Pre-Orders and You
Kickstarter is the new form of preordering. So advanced that you pay before development even starts [MOG]
Rarely Ever Preorder unless it is for Colectors Edition.

Before Last year i had only ever pre-order one game - Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Collectors Edition until Duke Nukem Forever Balls of Steel Edition.

Since then i had Preordered Sonic Generations for it Collectors edition, Skyward Sword, The Last Story, Pandora's Tower.

My Current Pre-order is Tales of Graces F

Except for The Wind waker the Above Preorders were online

Zavvi Packaging was not that great, my Skyward Sword Box has crushed edges, Ozgameshop's packaging was mush better

For when i do preorders, i usually do them as soon as possible as i would not want to miss out.

My Duke nukem Forever BoS Preorder was about 3 month's before release, Which also got me an Extra Poster.

Through luck i also got one of those of Baseball caps even though they were only for preorders of the standard edition - not that that i will ever wear it

i would never preorder a console, because of one occasion where a friend had preordered a gamecube.

I went and bought mine a week or two after release and it was almost $100 cheaper
Pre-ordered Diablo 3 last week.

The last game I pre-ordered before it would've been....... Gran Turismo 5.

Never pre-ordered anything on the net. I don't like the idea of having to wait an extra day for it to be posted etc (I know, not always the case) but considering I can just pick it up on the way home, doesn't bug me.
How many games a year do you pre-order? Depends on how many collector editions come out that I like the look of.

Is it always the same sort of game/same franchise, or random games you think look good? I used to preorder anything I intended to buy but now I only get the collector editions. If it has a decent figurine I generally want it.

Have you ever pre-ordered a game online before? Never but I intend to start looking to save money on new release collector editions if I can find them online.

And when you do pre-order, how long before release do you do it? Normally as soon as it is available so sometimes 6 months +

I rarely ever preorder games.
The only time I will is if it comes with an awesome collectors edition. Good quality figures are very persuasive to me. ;)
I only ever pre-order big Nintendo titles, usually from EB/Game.
Likeeee Donkey Kong Returns or Zelda.
I went into Game to pre-order Zelda Skyward Sword the day before it came out, They guy had a copy so he game it to me that day.

like nail polish and hand bags?
I usually pre-order on Steam if a new game releases for 50-60 because they will often come up on ours because the region-****ed pricing gets applied. If you get in early you can often get it for the US price instead of the $99.99 **** you Australia price.

Other stuff I pre-order because I'm too ****ing busy to get to a store, like Forza 4. I was pleasantly surprised that arrived at my house ON the launch day. I expected due to ordering online that transit time woulds see me get it a day late, but no, sure enough I received the game on the day. That is the reason I pre-ordered Guild Wars 2 CE online too, figured I'll probably get it at the same time. I could be wrong, but if thats the case it's no big deal because I'll just buy the normal digital edition as well.

Still haven't tried this yet, still haven;t found a game that interests me enough to get involved though.

Oh totally forgot about the Steam pre-order discount, most of the time a big title only gets around 10 bucks off, better than nothing I guess.
There was that one time on Steam where I wish I preorded Batman for $40 and then they put it up to $100. I was actually going to do it (probably) [Rage]
I pre-ordered GTA IV 2-3 years in advance :P

What a fanboy. Have you already pre-ordered GTAV? :P
Only ever pre-ordered Other M and Batman: AC. Pre ordered some music albums but not much at all. They were both online, never gone into a store and pre-ordered, mainly because of the massive price hike. I got both those games from OzGameShop. It was only a couple of months (2 max) before release.

I hadn't done it because I was worried I couldn't play it launch day. It took 2 weeks for me to get it anyway. I was just keen to play the game! I guess with Other M it was a love for the franchise, but I did like what they did with it in trailers anyway. Batman: AC was just because I liked AA, so again I guess it's because of the franchise.

No, I learned my lesson. Saying that though, GTAIV was like delayed a year and my receipt was like no usable in the end, they had to look me up :P

How many games a year do you pre-order?
One to four

Random
Have you ever pre-ordered a game online before?
No
And when you do pre-order, how long before release do you do it?
A month or less, but in 'huge' release titles I need to pre-order six or more months to secure a copy.

"To secure a copy?" how often do games sell out? I have never experienced that. :S
It's due to 'collector's' or whatever edition that EB Games asks due to the amount allocated per store.
How many games a year do you pre-order?
Depends on the game, I have preorder one this year.
