Stolen phone - What to do and how to avoid it

I thought with out collective minds and experience we could put together some info to prevent our beloved smartphones from getting stolen. Also what to do if your phone happens to unfortunately get stolen.
These days we use our smartphones for just about everything and they are filled with a heap of personal information. On top of that these things are close to 1000 bucks brand new so you don't want to fork out for another one if not needed.

Prevention
• Add a password or pin to your phone even though it is a little annoying entering that in every time. Android users it's recommended that you don't use the pattern lock because your greasy fingers leaves a visible trail.
• NEVER leave your phone anywhere unattended in a public place. Thieves are quick, you just need to take you eye off your phone for a couple of seconds and it could go for a walk.
• Add a SIM lock and phone lock if available.
• Get phone insurance if you don't mind paying a couple extra bucks a month. Might be worth getting this for the first few months of your contract until your phone devalue.

What to do when your phone is stolen
Call your service provider and ask them to block the IMEI so the phone is useless.

Always hang onto an old phone just in case yours goes missing, it is pretty annoying not having a phone for a few days/weeks while waiting for a new one to arrive.

My phone never leaves my pocket unless im using it. I wouldn't dare leaving it on a table.
If you have an android there is an app called "Plan B" which you can install AFTER you lost your phone and it will try to locate it. Of course it wont work if the phone is off or has no 3G access.

It would be better to have an app like that on your phone before you lose it. I dont believe iPhones can remote install apps so they would need find my iPhone installed.
