1066Mhz vs 800Mhz DDR2 RAM

338 Views 22 Posts Locked PC Hardware
Since I'm running 4gb of DDR2 800Mhz RAM I was wondering if it's worth spending money on upgrading to 1066Mhz RAM.
Is there a noticeable difference in performance in both gaming and general desktop work?
good for overclocking (:

as you don't have to overclock the ram to overclock the CPU more .

4GB is plenty in any language. Use that money you would've spent on buying an i7
no , he meant replace the current ram with faster ram .

not more ram capacity .

I know.

I was just curious since I just found out it can be done for under 100 bucks. An i7 will cost a lot more than that, new mobo, RAM etc etc.
Bah you have money to burn. Get the i7, I know you want to
i7 = 920($400~) + DDR3 RAM ($140) + MOBO ($300~)

You can never have enough ram!

right now that's limited at 16gbs

Snow Leopard extends the 64-bit technology in Mac OS X to support breakthrough amounts of RAM — up to a theoretical 16TB

that's the x64 system .

there is no hardware yet to support it

theoretical

Then we wait. I think that 16gb of ram will support us for quite awhile. It would be nice to have 16gb of ram...Windows would be like 'Oh let me click a program...boom'. Pops up straight away!

What's limited to 16Gb? a 32-Bit OS is limited to 4gb of ram TOTAL, including video-ram. a 64-bit OS is limited to 128Gb of ram in a multi-motherboard server.

I think it would be a waste. It's not that much faster, you won't notice an sort of real difference to justify the cost. DDR3 you can see the difference. Save your money for a 150gb or 300gb Raptor 10,000 RPM Hard Drive. Way faster read speeds and loading of anything. That will show through as a real difference.
Didn't you buy heat spreaders for your RAM? Just overclock it otherwise whats the point of them!

Thanks mate I was thinking about one of those Raptor drives since I hate the way my computer pauses for a second when I hit a check point in a game.

Can you over clock RAM safely?
i think so, its pretty much the same as a CPU overclock isnt it
Yea just need proper heat sinks and maybe a set of fans.
if your cpu's fsb is 800mhz is there a point to get ram that is faster? since the ram is for the cpu... is there a advantage of having your ram faster than your cpu?

im just curious cause i like computing
i dont think you can clock it over the CPU, as it wont use it anyway. i dunno, im not a major overclocker yet

if your cpu FSB hardly reaches 800MHz then there will be no performance gain if you got 1066MHz ram .

it will only give you more overclocking potential .

guyver has heat spreaders (:
