Best USB Control Pad

511 Views 22 Posts Locked PC Hardware
What's a good USB control pad that won't break the bank and actually works with most games. Right now I have a generic Playstation look alike controller. With the drivers installed, everything registers perfectly in the control panel but the only game I can get it to work on is an Arcade Classics Pack.
Hmm I'm on the lookout too. I'm trying to debate if a wireless 360 controller is worth it. However, I don't like the placement of the analog stick- I prefer buttons there.

Yeah I've had a few people say go with the xbox controller but I have grown accustomed to the central mounted analogue sticks of the Playstation design.

Ditto. My friend picked up some $15 one from the Reject Shop that he claims to work really well. I have my doubts though.
I'm also interested in finding a Playstation style analogue USB controller. I have never used a XBox style controller. Someone out there must have a good one?
You better not want that for Prince of Persia Guyv

Nah Prince of Persia plays nice with keyboard and mouse, it's Tomb Raider that feels odd at the moment.
Thats alright then was gonna say how can you not be fine playing with KB+Mouse
I use an xbox controller and it works great! the Microsoft software you get with it makes it work in all games even games that have no options for a controller! If you want a quality one that is what i would suggest most games are programmed with xbox 360 in mind these days so it should be the easiest.
I have been tossing up whether or not to do this, but if I was, xbox controller all the way.

360 controller. they last a fairly long time... as long as you don't drop them... and they are fairly easy to set up and use.
Definitely the Xbox 360 controller.

It is by far the most confortable and easy to use controller out there, it looks good, and it works really well

The price difference is DEFINITELY worth it
i have Logetech one its pretty good (a PS Lookalike) or i use my actual PS3 contoller

yea i saw one 2 hours ago and it lookes axact except it has 123 and 4 on it

can u use ur ps3 controller?
The Xbox controller looks very popular, and sounds like it works well with different types of software. I will have to check one out.
Go with the xbox 360 controller. I have the Wireless receiver for windows and I just sync my 360 controller with it and its fantastic. No with the PS3 one your going to need a 3rd party adapter and they haven't brought one out yet I don't think.
Were would be the best place to buy a 360 controller and adapter??

yeah thats the one
and you can use your ps3 controller you just need a driver and and plug on the charging cord and your set!
While browsing my local EB's 2 for $50 sale, I came across several 360 look-a-like PC control pads. Does anybody know how well Joytech pads are constructed? The analogs won't die after an hour's play, will they? I might pick up one or two next time I go out.
I first bought a 360 look-alike controller made by Powerwave. Worked mostly fine, but I'll use that term loosely. When it operated it was really good. The triggers weren't variable axis' like the 360 controller but in many games that didn't really matter, and of course it wouldn't be compatible with the 360 controller support in games. What drove me nuts was that it would stop working every now and again, the receiver would need to be unplugged then plugged back in to make it reconnect. After it happened for nearly a month I tried to take it back to EB, said that the warranty issue should be taken up with Powerwave. Looked on the website and they had no contact details.

Fed up, I accepted my loss. Gave the controller to someone else and then went to DSE to shell out $90 for the 360 wireless controller and dongle. The dongle will function with any 360 controller, including the guitars and wheels. The batteries (while using Duracell alkaline) last me a very extended period of time. The triggers function as a Z axis which makes it very good for racing games. The controller is supported automatically by many new software titles too.

Pay the extra bits and get the 360 controller. It's well worth the quality.
