Hi Guys,

Just wondering if anyone else is overclocking Intel E8400 (stock 3.0ghz). I'm kind of an overclock noob and recently overclocked mine to 3.6ghz. Just wondering what voltage everyone is giving theirs and if everyone thinks its safe to be overclocking as I am with stock fan.

At the moment I'm giving it about 1.35volts (I think, need to check) and it hits about 55 degrees while running prime95 stress tests (fan 100%)

I overclocked my P2 720 back to 3.21Ghz from 2.81Ghz as i rekon it was safe but it was just a dud psu im running prime 95 till tonight on stock volts and cooling. might get a aftermarket cooler soon though

dont bother with prime, you just waste time.

use IntelBurnTest. Run 5 tests at first on standard. then if that comes out all clear run 10-15.

monitor your temps aswell ;]

I just did the test with stock speed.
The CPU never exceeded 60*C.

Is that good?

I'm starting to want to overclock... would that benefeit it's performance in any way? Would I get some extra FPS in-game?

Yeah that's stable.. One thing. Is that i7 even OC'd? if it isn't why did you bother with the test =.="

intelburntest is a more efficient way of stressing the cpu in a short amount of time. by those results your cpu is stable.

if it IS OC'd what are you running it on?

edit, wont benifit you ingame, but will in video encoding.

Thinking of overclocking it, but I'm wondering what sort of differences in temperature I would get by cranking it up to 3GHz-ish? I'm using stock heatsink remember, and I don't want to harm my CPU in any way, shape, or form.

And it would be good if it helps in video encoding, my sister is piling up the DVDs she wants me to put onto her laptop. Just ripping them off disk to .avi takes about 12 minutes per full-length movie.

I wouldn't do any overclocking with a stock cooler, that thing is the bare minimum for cooling the CPU at standard clock. #.0Ghz with hyperthreading and turbo mode enabled will probably put you in the high 70 to mid 80 degree mark.

Alright... I won't bother. There is nothing wrong with it as it is.

Would I be able to overclock my RAM?

It's running at 1066 and 1.5V.

I OC'd by 400mhz and on full load the temps of some were around 50 and 40 and 30 in different areas, Is that good btw im on stock volts and stock cooler

not many. it depends which bios it has. and if the manufacturer has made a bios with clocking options.

correct. as laptops have cooling that is barely enough for the cpu to be on stock

That would depend on if you have air con in the same room as you computer. If there is a good 10'C difference then i probably would tone it down to keep the same sort of temps.
