CPU Overclock

Hi Guys,

Just wondering if anyone else is overclocking Intel E8400 (stock 3.0ghz). I'm kind of an overclock noob and recently overclocked mine to 3.6ghz. Just wondering what voltage everyone is giving theirs and if everyone thinks its safe to be overclocking as I am with stock fan.

At the moment I'm giving it about 1.35volts (I think, need to check) and it hits about 55 degrees while running prime95 stress tests (fan 100%)

Tell us about your CPU overclock..
well mine runs at 22*C when at 2900rpm.... so i might overclock and jack it up to 3900rpm
or i'll just go buy some liquid cooling......
I'm up to 2.9Ghz on my Q6600 and since I added a drive bay cooler myfrag.com.au/ the core temps will sit at 49 to 52 degrees under full load for a couple of hours.

I've googling around and watching some YouTube videos about other people over clocking their Q6600s to 3.0 and some guys have had to fiddle around with voltages, ram timing and ram voltages for it to be stable. My Q6600 runs stable at 2.9 and all I did was change the pcie to 100 and increase the FSB and everything runs nice even when stress tested. Is this because I have used different components or am I just lucky?

...yes I double posted for some reason the thread won't bump

Edit:

That's what everything looks like on 3.0Ghz running Prime94 for about half an hour, I'll let it run on longer and see what happens...

WTH, your CPU is soo cool compared to mine My stock idle 940 runs hotter than you Q6600 overclocked on load, something is wrong with my chip........
I left it running for 2 hours and the hottest it got was 50 degrees in two of the cores but all the fans were pumping along at full blast. Not the most pleasant sound in the world.

My mate has a AMD Phenom X4 as well(2.5 version) and his idle temps are 50ish. At first I thought I didn't put the heat sink on properly, AMDs must run hotter than intels.

nah man
my e6850 idles at 30 on a good cold day, 45 during the afternoons lately.
on load it can get up to something stupid like 70 lately.
amd's are known to be hot .

especially with a stock amd cooler kenny .

dw, the TRUE 120 will fix the problems (:

Yeah hope so, got the cooler today but forgot to get some rubbing alchol Any other suggestions for ways of removing old thermal grease?
use glad wrap around ur fingers and rub it off .

or one of the glad bags that have that seal thingy for sandwiches .

flip it inside out

put your finger in the corner of the bag and wipe .

Will that be effective as the alcohol? Should i put some water or something on it first?

EDIT: Great news

I installed my Thermalright TRUE 120 today and very happy to report that both my core and cpu temps have been reduced by 20+ degrees Ive now manged to overclock it to 3.55ghz, but any higher than that without changing votlages etc. it wont start up Anybody got any tips for me? Ill get back to overclocking it later. Gotta tonne of HW to do....

The Thermalright TRUE 120 is a nice looking cooler but I noticed that there's no fan on it, did you add one your self?
no fan whaaaa?
heh

gotta be better than my stock intel cooler

(migt be why im v.interested in liquid cooling....(

Yeah you gotta add your own fans to it, put 2 120mm on it and its awesome

it's used as a great passive cooler if your case is good enough it will provide almost the same cooling as if it had a fan on it .
my e6850 is currently overclocked to 3.4ghz on stock cooling and voltage(auto).
i am hoping that i will be able to get an OK liquid cooling system soon.
what tips do you guys have for me to bump my cpu up to 4ghz or over?

or,
do you think its better if i got a crazy good air cooling system that would be able to keep my cpu stable at 4ghz?
Hey Guys just got a new powersupply and so I'm mucking around with my E8400 again, I have quite a few questions:

1. Is playing around with 8x multiplier worth it? I've heard you can achieve great overclocks on lower voltage using a lower multiplier

2. Is it possible to damage my motherboard from overclocking? when I overclock my CPU I always check voltage and temperatures but I never check anything regarding motherboard.

3. Is it worth overclocking my 800mhz Kingston RAM, what are the results and will it shorten the life

4. I'm getting voltages of 1.184 in CPU-z (under load) and as low as 1.20 at idle but my motherboard is set to give 1.225. Is this normal? Is it due to my cheap motherboard?
Ok so now that I have the good air cooler I want to get cracking on some overclocking.
Only problem is, I'm not that big on all the details on how to go about it.
Here are all my specs
E6850 @ 3.0ghz (want to OC to 4.0ghz)
xfx nforce 680i lt
kingston 4gb 800mhz RAM
TRUE 120

I tried upping the voltage of the cpu to 1.45v
changing the cpu speed to 1777 to make 4.0ghz
changed the RAM timing to 4-4-4-12 2T

When I boot I get the error message "system now in safe more. reset cpu or memory frequency"

I then unlinked the cpu and memory frequencies so I could change the RAM to 800mhz, BSOD upon trying to boot into windows.

everything is back to normal (pretty much auto for everything)

tips? hints? guides to follow?
thanks guys
Wish I could help ya DoYL but I'm a "leave everything on auto guy" as well

I'm trying 2.4 to 3.0ghz on my Q6600 again since I think most of the hot weather is gone.
Stress testing now on 333 x 9 FSB, auto voltages, all fans on full.

Getting a little worried since I just saw a core spike to 57 degrees for a second there.

EDIT:
Decided to go back into BIOS and set the voltage to stock (1.232V) and everything seems to be running cooler, all cores under on load average 48 - 51 degrees.

EDIT2:
Seems to bump up to 56 degrees depending on which part of the Prime 95 test it's on.
Also wondering why 2 of my cores run a little warmer than the rest.
57 is cool. Below 60 you will be fine dude
How do you get into the BiOS and what do you change to overclock

I'm thinking of OC on a phenom 9950

I'll research into it more if I would do it

And can this damage anything?

Since I locked in the voltages my PC runs much cooler than it did when in auto mode and at a higher clock speed.

Most motherboards you can access the BIOS by pressing del when booting up.
I got my Phenom 940 to 3.9ghz and it went to 58 degrees when I was running prime 95, that was on 1.6 volts And also by how much will my processor's life be shortened by overclocking?
at 1.6 volts ?

that thing will last 3 months ..

ROOK1E said: at 1.6 volts ?

Yeah 1.6 was its max but it usually is around 1.576, but this isnt as stable though. Right now Ive got it at 1.375 only 0.05 more than stock but its clock is only 35 degrees, but theres only about 1 or 2 degrees temp difference between the two
anyone thinking of overclocking their i7 ?

i've got a 920 .

want just a steady oc of 3.6

read you can do it on stock voltage .

going it do it tmr.

btw, if ya do have an i7, post up ur mobo and ram .
