A general discussion thread about CPU coolers because sometimes the stock heat sink just doesn't cut it

I use a Zalman cnps9700 led www.zalman.co.kr/ and it does a good job of cooling the CPU. Relatively easy to install but you do have to pull the mobo out because it comes with it's own backing plate.
At standard clock speed I had the fan on it's lowest setting and you can barely hear it but when you wind it up to full you get a bit of high pitched hum. It does look good and really fills out the case.

Idle. Sif i could do that on load with air with fan on low.

What is the most efficient CPU cooler which takes a standard 92 or 120mm fan, and preferably blows air onto the rear exhaust fan, not the chipset.

Most efficient at cooling, price, I guess up to about $100, Intel socket 775, maybe 1366 & 1156 later

I think you would have to go with Noctua NH-U12P.

as if you went with the TRUE 120 or Prolimatech, you would only get the heatsink, which is the same price as the noctua, thing is that you aslo have to buy fan mounting clips and a fan. which exceeds $100.

it includes mounting brackets for all current sockets. (amd 920pin, 1366, 1156, 775.)

Since I've had my cpu cooler installed my computer crashes under load. The fan at the back of the case gets hot, the cpu cooler is next to it, but temps arn't that high. Anyone know what could be the cause?

Wow that's worse than my Zalman 9700 S: and i'm OCing..

Umm.. Reseat the v10. might be loose or not enough paste.

OR the case isn't getting enough airflow.

IF you ARE overclocking. run 5 tests of intel burn test to start off with. if they show as failures, your OC isn't stable.

I haven't overclocked yet.
How do you reset the cooler?
The v10 is stable its on correctly. I'm thinking its not getting enough airflow as you said, but I got no room for another fan

reseat the cooler.
as in take it off the cpu, clear off the thermal grease, reapply the thermal grease and then put the cooler back on and make sure it is on 100% screwed down wicked tight etc.

sounds like something in your bios is screwy then.
poked around in there at all have you?

Are you sure that the fans on the v10 are spinning?
