CPU coolers

A general discussion thread about CPU coolers because sometimes the stock heat sink just doesn't cut it

I use a Zalman cnps9700 led www.zalman.co.kr/ and it does a good job of cooling the CPU. Relatively easy to install but you do have to pull the mobo out because it comes with it's own backing plate.
At standard clock speed I had the fan on it's lowest setting and you can barely hear it but when you wind it up to full you get a bit of high pitched hum. It does look good and really fills out the case.

What about the Corsair hydro H50, is it better still, I mean being water cooling and all?

H50 outperforms the Prolimatech Megahelem which is considered as the best air-cooler.
that does depend on which bench you look at though.

I just swapped my giant fighter jet noise level cooler for a stock cooler... on my P4.

Here is a screenshot at 10 minutes through a P95 run (no oc just to watch temps).

its doing a damn good job... pretymuch the same as my massive aftermarket cooler. and when i started p95 it went from 22 to 28, and then slowly creeped up to 32 and flattened out.
So has this dropped the overall noise level of your computer or is there still other components making noise?

Yeah it dropped the noise by a S**T load! but i have one fan left making a rather annoying noise, but thats keeping the passive quadro cool

But really i can sit next to my computer now and not go deaf xD

so maybe some late nights with the internet will be aloud now since you can barely hear my computer.
Officially the ugliest CPU cooler I've seen, it looks like a food processor

Is there a decently priced Socket 775 CPU cooler that doesn't involve bloody pushpins? I would much rather screw the heatsink down than try to manipulate pushpins again.

It's usually the bigger more expensive coolers that come with a back plate. Here's a few 775 socket coolers to pick from www.pccasegear.com/

I wasn't intending to spend much money on it as my temps are not too bad, so I was looking at the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 LP, but having read several reviews it doesn't seem like much of an improvement over stock cooling. I may buy it later when I'm bored?
that AC freezer 7 looks a lot like the AMD phenom II 955 BE's stock cooler.
Works well on the dual cores.

I like this bit in the description

noise levels will fall to a whisper quiet 34.4dBA range which is essentially silent.

umm, even 20dba isn't anywhere near silent...

Hehe I bought it anyway just to see what it's like, and in any case, it's got a screw-in installation system which will be totally worth the price alone. I hate the default pushpin installation method with the fire of a thousand suns. $15 at PCG.

I'll lap the base before I install it.
Don't get me started on those ****ing pushpins
You know what would be a great heatsink attachment solution? Removable standoffs that snaps into the motherboard, which are tapped to accept screws with very large teeth so that you don't strip the screw if you overtorque it. It would be just like fitting a wheel to a car because hey, if it's good enough to hold a vital part of a motor vehicle in place, it's good enough to attach a heatsink to a CPU.

A handy video for those that are new to aftermarket coolers.
A friend of mine from work removed the innards of a spare mini-computer and put it all into tower case. He bought two $10 desk fans from the Reject Shop, took them apart and wired them up to the case. So now he has the coolest case I have had the pleasure of seeing, wasted on crappy parts.
Ive got a Q6600 and i am looking for a great cpu cooler.

Ive been thinking of getting the H50 and a new noctua 140mm case fan, removing the corsair fan and strapping the rad to the back of my case with the noctua strapped to the front of it in a push pull set up.

Ive already worked out how to use my 140mm fan at the back of my case with the noctua mounting brackets aswell.

What do you guys think?

Should i rather go with a 4100 cooler and add fans to it or should i go through with this plan?
I heard Noctua fans make a really big noise when at full speed the 140mm might be different though. I'd go with some more quieter fans in a push-pull configuration. There's only so much cooling a single radiator can do, I have my fans on low and barely notice a difference in performance when the fans are turned up.
no way man, the noctua fans are heaps quieter than the xigmateks I have.
They just look really really stupid.
I'm getting a H50 for Christmas (unless i find something better in the next 2 weeks)

For my haf what kind of setup do you fellas reckon?

+1

make the side of the haf exhaust. the rear intake, the top exhaust and the front intake.
but that would be sucking all the air out of my gpu wouldnt it?

so what?

if you want optimum temps for the H50, you need it to have fresh air.

the gpu can have the air from the bottom fan. (which should be an intake)
i'll have to have a think about that then :/

thnx rook.

There's more than enough air flow in the HAF to do that.
if you put the cooler at the rear, and have it as an exhaust in a haf, then i guess the sidefans could suffice...
