A general discussion thread about CPU coolers because sometimes the stock heat sink just doesn't cut it

I use a Zalman cnps9700 led www.zalman.co.kr/ and it does a good job of cooling the CPU. Relatively easy to install but you do have to pull the mobo out because it comes with it's own backing plate.
At standard clock speed I had the fan on it's lowest setting and you can barely hear it but when you wind it up to full you get a bit of high pitched hum. It does look good and really fills out the case.

Yeah don't do it on stock. These are good I have one on mine www.pccasegear.com/...

I need a cooler for my server. It idles at about 43*C in it's cabinet in the garage. About 35*C if I leave the cabinet doors open. But when summer comes around I'm going to need some cooler... cooling

The Noctua NH-U12P SE2 is a beast, most Noctua coolers do a great job.

I'm thinking of buying another one of those for my server. Is there something else that would be better? I don't need it to be quiet, or pretty. I want it to drop some degrees!

I'll probably go with that Noctua again though.

How about a second hand True with a couple of 120mm high speed fans. That will do the trick.

I have a giant Noctua , and a Coolermaster v6 GT .. ( just collecting dust ) ... I am forced to use a far older model Thermaltake Big typ 120 VX .. as it's only one so far i find can still allow me to use all my RAM, other coolers block the dim slots :(

i really should consider moving to W/C me tinks .. :P

watercooling can be good fun.
A few of the members here swear by it.
Some of us have dabbled and just don't have the patience :P

it's the largest one .. the NH - D14 ... bloody massive thing .. but meh does not work on my rig .. sob

I often pass on parts to other mates .. better than doing nothing with them ..

yeah I have a mate that gets lots of my old goodies.
including this junk coolermaster cpu/gpu water cooling kit (like the H50 but older and crapper)

those noctuas are bloody massive. Shave you can't get it to fit and have to use a..... thermaltake...

I've seen some people get the big ass Noctura cooler to fit with 6 occupied dims slots, from memory you raise the bracket of the back fan(closest to the RAM modules) and remove the cooler fins from RAM module closest to the cooler.

So what's so good about the true 120 for my purposes?

I have a budget of about $100. I am tempted by the Noctua NH D-14, because I am pleased with the U12P on my i7.

The True seems a little pricey after buying fans, but I'll do it if it is really worth it.

I like the tru, simply as it takes less room, if your only using a few dims eg: 2gb or 4gb of ram , the Noctua D-14 should fit for you fine ... just won't fit for me ... as I fill all six slots :P
