CPU coolers

A general discussion thread about CPU coolers because sometimes the stock heat sink just doesn't cut it

I use a Zalman cnps9700 led www.zalman.co.kr/ and it does a good job of cooling the CPU. Relatively easy to install but you do have to pull the mobo out because it comes with it's own backing plate.
At standard clock speed I had the fan on it's lowest setting and you can barely hear it but when you wind it up to full you get a bit of high pitched hum. It does look good and really fills out the case.

I have a budget of about $100. I am tempted by the Noctua NH D-14, because I am pleased with the U12P on my i7.
The True seems a little pricey after buying fans, but I'll do it if it is really worth it.

well the D14 comes with fans and romps the TRUE ;)

I'm leaning towards the D14, PCCG has them, so it will be quick to get to me too.

Was just trying to help you save money for the non essential.

I know man, thanks. A second hand true is only about $20 cheaper before postage and fans.
www.pccasegear.com/... what a space hogging CPU cooler :*O
wow, I didn't think it could get much worse than the coolermaster V10 as far as size goes.

How does this thing compare against the Corsair H50 and H70?

I bought one the other day. It is the most ridiculous thing i have ever installed, took me over an hour to get it on [Facepalm]
how does it cool, what cooler were you using before?

I was using a coolermaster TX3 before. I am using a push-pull config on the coolit, it sits about 10c lower than the tx3. When i get some better thermal compound it should be better.
use Arctic Silver 5, I always knew it was good, so I looked up a review, and it was number 1 out of like almost 100 products.

EDIT:
here it is:
benchmarkreviews.com/...

I hate these reviews that use "pages" just show me the whole thing on one screen dammit! :P

Heres the page you will acutally want to see though, the results for A- to A+

That would have taken bloody ages to test 80 different thermal pastes.
Ok help I can't decide which cooler and don't have time to research. I'm loosely considering the Thermalrite Venomous X or the Corsair H70 but I don't know which to go with [Rage] I'm water cooling my GPUs later on so I dunno which way to go there. CPU will be on air or H70; not part of the WCing loop as performance of coolers is ample. The lesser air flow of a massive radiator cock blocking to top vents worries me with air though.

How is your H70 Guyber??
I have the H50 not the H70, the H50 does a good job for what it is.
O rly. So temps on what ghz?

40ish under load @3.1GHz, occasional 50 degree spike now and then on some cores, really bad overclock, warm room.
Mmmm that is a delicious temp.
Cool cool I'll order a H70 then :)

Not sure which fans to buy. Have to see if the Classified has dual 4-pins nearby. Otherwise I might try the air penetrators.

Tempted to the the new red Prolimitechs but I almost don't believe the specs...
Ive got some Noctua 140mm on my H70, real quiet. mid 40degrees with Q6600 overclocked to 3.2, i can go to 3.6 and the temps stay under 50 degrees...
I'd love some Noctuas but their looks always put me off. I want my components looking nice :(

Wait 140mm :S isn't it a 120mm rad!?
Nocturas have good flow to noise ratings but that colour is ugly as sin.
Yes the connections for the Noctua's is for 120mm & 140mm ;) So it fits on the H70 inside my HAF X case
You'd lose some airflow out the sidles though :( I think I'll paint some P12s. They look sick with black outer and brown blades :). It's gonna cost me.., I need 8 of them lol
probablt stupid Q. but anyone know for certain if dust on fans/airslots affects the temps inside the case? not major dust cover-up just a few paches here n there....
I got a bunch of spare Noctua's, let me check what Ive got and maybe we can work something out :D

Aw **** lol I already bought Scythe Gentle Typhoons! Sorta glad I did, I was gonna mod the P12s but I was a but worried about ****ing up $135 worth of fans XD Scythes don't look as gay. Would still like to paint them though. Would like red blades to match my colour scheme.
