CPU coolers

A general discussion thread about CPU coolers because sometimes the stock heat sink just doesn't cut it

I use a Zalman cnps9700 led www.zalman.co.kr/ and it does a good job of cooling the CPU. Relatively easy to install but you do have to pull the mobo out because it comes with it's own backing plate.
At standard clock speed I had the fan on it's lowest setting and you can barely hear it but when you wind it up to full you get a bit of high pitched hum. It does look good and really fills out the case.

ROOK1E said: what temps are you comparing it to ?
the stock intel ?
and also is this on load or idle ?
if on idle then that's extremely good .

I'm getting idle temps about 5 degrees cooler, I'm on 3.6 now and the idle temps are 3 degrees cooler than 3.0 idle temps. On load its easily 10 degrees cooler and is running 5 degrees cooler on 3.6 then it did on 3.0

hope that makes sense
nicee .

and you're comparing to the intel stock cooler right ?

How noisy is it at full fan speed?

Yeh I am

It goes to less RPM (2600 as opposed to 2800) but instead of making a little high pitched whirring noise like the intel stock fan, it makes more of a full air movement sound. Its hard to judge which is louder because they are completely different sounds but the difference between the 1500rpm temperatures and 2500rpm temperatures are only a few degrees (1500rpm is quiet).
When I had the CPU at stock clock speed I had the fan speed on the lowest setting and it still ran very cool, I reckon I could have gotten away with making it a passive cooler if it was below standard clock speed.
How do you measure the temperature of your cpu anyway?
Cause i dont see any software that is used with my V8.
i used a program called "Everest Home Edition" even tells me the hdd...

That program will tell you what stickers you have on your case Very good software.
There was a guy who made a gaming computer completely immersed in mineral oil. The mineral oil is nonconductive so it doesn't interfere with the hardware, and the oil keeps the system cool "for up to twelve hours at peak load" without any fans.

The downside is that the oil gets very hot unless you pass it through a radiator or install an aquarium cooler.
that would be very heavy DD:

desi, that sounds like my kind of system

its not hard to pump oil around a tiny object such as a pc
I've seen mineral oil cooled PCs on youtube, that's got to be very messy when wanting to upgrade anything.
I'm wanting to look into getting a crazily overpowered CPU cooler for around the $200 range. looking around and it seems that most of them are under that much so I think i'm in luck.

any suggestions please.
I have an E6850 which runs at 3ghz
i want the max cooling power to be able to run it at 3.8-4ghz.
I have seen this one
www.pccasegear.com/
looks cool but i dont know how good it is for overclocking as it doesnt come out until the 17th of Feb.
I have also heard about this
www.pccasegear.com/
the Thermalright TRUE something something

give me what you got
The Thermalright TRUE is 2kg! that will rip your mobo in half o_O The V10 looks good, it's lighter, compatible with multiple sockets so you can carry it over to your next build and I like how it cools your RAM as well. I'd go the V10...now I want it
lol
guyver, i think the problem is that you and i have very similar tastes.
maybe i should stop telling you what i want and you do the same and it will save us both monies

Guyver said: The Thermalright TRUE is 2kg!

the TRUE 120 copper is .

but normal (black and silver) are like 200g

if it was out of the TRUE and v10, i go V10 .
yeah it does look like an animal
comes with 1 fan inbetween the fins it and 1 for the RAM

the mrs is going to absolutely hate me at cash handout time
just to let you know ...

the TRUE black does a lot better than the V10 and it's 90 with fan bought .
where is it $90 with fan bought?

its less than 1kg which would be much kinder on my mobo
nah, like buy it then buy a fan separately with the clips .
yeah i get that
staticice was saying nothing under $99

do you have a link for the performance difference?
I am highly interested in this now

Yes very cool but upgrading anything would be very messy and apparently the oil eventually gets hot and loses all it's cooling properties.
Still I wouldn't mind doing it and throwing in some sea monkeys in there
you get oil filters
i have seen this oil used in massive massive power transformers.
the only time the oil goes bad is if it is exposed to air for too long (days) or if something inside blows up and the oil burns.
and then the bad oil can just get filtered out.

and dont be stupid. how could sea monkey live in there?
they are called SEA monkey for a reason. duhh

**Edit

for anyone that cares here is what I decided to go with.
Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme - aka. TRUE 120

and 2 of
Scythe Ultra Kaze 3000rpm

will arrive hopefully next week. i just can NOT wait
