A general discussion thread about CPU coolers because sometimes the stock heat sink just doesn't cut it

I use a Zalman cnps9700 led www.zalman.co.kr/ and it does a good job of cooling the CPU. Relatively easy to install but you do have to pull the mobo out because it comes with it's own backing plate.
At standard clock speed I had the fan on it's lowest setting and you can barely hear it but when you wind it up to full you get a bit of high pitched hum. It does look good and really fills out the case.

my cpu used to run temps like that _e6850 @ 3ghz)
but now on idle it is much lower, like in the 20's and in the 30-40's on load.
still too high for my liking but hey, having a heater on in the room doesnt help it much.

i know my e8500 in my server doesnt get that high with stock hsf and thats on 24/7. 50degrees is pretty hot for idle.

have you reseated the heatsink or removed the thermal pad and tried thermal grease??

have you also checked for dust on the heatsink fan

Oc to 2.8GhZ but i thought thats was stable on stock

Both, I basically have the controller maxed but the mobo still slows it down when on idle.

stock clocks
only clocked to 2.88 lol Stock cooling sux balls but it does aiight

Hey I'm going to be building a PC for a mate using the stock cooler for now and I've got some Coolermaster and Arctic Silver heatsink paste laying around and I was wondering if I should use that rather than the pre-applied Intel stuff. and just scrape off the Intel stuff

You can scrape it off than use some rubbing alcohol to clean it off than apply the Arctic Silver

The Intel stuff they put on the coolers is not very sticky compared to some I have come by so scraping should do fine.

But Arctic Silver would have better heat conductivity right?

Make sure you load up on all the RAM you'll every need because you wouldn't want to be taking this thing on and off again. I almost bought this but ended up getting the V8 instead.

I almost bought the V10, but got a true 120 instead.
It looks effing beastly though!
Yeah, the cooler covers all the ram slots, load it up completely (or as much as you want).
Thermal Electric Cooling power ftw.
