Help me pick a laptop/desktop

As some of you know, I bought a cheap second hand laptop which is overheating and shutting off, I'm just gonna take it back and go buy a brand new one off Ebay I think, or elsewhere.

Doing this mainly to upgrade from my Core 2 Quad desktop which is showing it's age. I've already had to replace the PSU and the GPU just to play games.

What I want/need is a laptop/desktop that will let me edit full HD video preferably and play the latest games such as Skyrim without any hassles.

Mien current specs are as follows...

Just so you know, I do trust Ebay enough to buy a PC off there, it's where I got this one from in the first place. This is the laptop I'm looking at on Ebay at the moment, it's a good $100+ cheaper than buying it from DSE.

I want a laptop for the advantages a portable computer will give me and I'm starting to prioritize portability more and more with current film making plans. However, I would sacrifice that for a sweet desktop rig if I can do so at the same price.

I'm looking to spend about $800.

Your desktop would be faster than that. GTX460 vs laptop 6770 = fail. GTX460 trades blows with a desktop sized 6850. Is desktop an option for you? Box only?

That is a good price for that laptop regardless.

Yes it is, and after some thought I think it's the way to go.
I'd like to upgrade what I've got rather than go out and buy brand new everything if I can avoid it, but I'd want to have duel graphics cards and I don't know if I can get a motherboard that will take my CPU as well as another GPU. The idea is to replace the mobo so I can put an extra GPU in and then install Windows 7 to breath some new life into what I've already got. Extra HDDs are a given, 150GB I've put up with for too long.

I am considering a CPU upgrade, some of the prices on PCCaseGear are quiet alright, but I'd be tempted to go all out and get two 8 core AMD CPUs even though a single 8 core would be enough I reckon, but who wants to settle for "enough", especially when you're encoding video? :P

What would you put the two CPU's into though? Only server boards really have dual socket. And also AMD are shit so you'd be better with a Quad core Intel. The new Ivy Bridge CPU's are due soon.

Which is ivy bridge? 2011 socket or a complete successor to sandy bridge?

What do you reckon? I'm thinking about it because that's probably the cheapest way I'm gonna get a second gen i7, not to mention the rest of the specs which are pretty much all an upgrade of what I've currently got

Thanks Doyl, but it's a bit moot now since I'll have to wait a while again before buying since the dude who said he was going to reimburse me $650 for something never put it in writing and "doesn't remember" -_-

I can't justify buying a new computer at this stage without that money since I'm saving for a car at the same time...I should be able to do something around that what with my hours going up at work by a heck of a lot recently and their only going to keep going up.

Don't buy that. Ir looks ok from the outset until you look through the pages and see the parts. Bad case, bad psu, bad ram and very bad motherboard. 6870 is agpod choice for under 1k build but surely you could get 2 of them and decent parts for that budget.

Edit: yeah got one in a cart on pccg for 835 with better everything so you could add another 169 for another 6870 and you got a beat for under a grand.

Got this one from Ebay, back when Core 2 Quad was the best thing out there :P

Starting to consider a few other ways to upgrade, I'm thinking a better way to upgrade is to start buying parts I can use in the future as well. IE: A new HDD definately, Windows 7 (what's the best way to buy Win7?) some extra RAM maybe and at least a new screen.

I'm only planning on editing video aimed at an internet audience at the moment anyway, so I don't really need the power to edit Full HD video at the moment since most everything will be SD anyway is my reasoning.

You ned a platform update if you're coming from C2D. DDR3 as I'm assuming you have a DDR2 board so you need mobo/cpu/ram.

And could I still put Windows 7 on what I've already got then? I'm assuming I'd have to buy a full retail copy and that I couldn't get away with buying an OEM version off PCCaseGear if I wanna upgrade my CPU in future...

That's quite handy to know, I think I have actually done this in the past as well, I just hate having to call them so I usually forget my whole experience as quickly as possible :O

Even though I'm probably going to build a new computer now, I found this in my saved searches on Ebay which is just computer gear in general in my city. I might make a go for it if it stays nice and low in price.
