Laptop shuts off while playing games

322 Views 14 Posts PC Hardware
So I just bought a second hand laptop, HP DV7-3112TX, and while I was giviing Runescape a go, the laptop just shut off. I tried it again, same thing. Not using the GPU (GT 230M) seems to keep it shutting off.

I'm downloading the latest drivers for the GPU since they were way out of date to see if that fixes it, but I'd like to avoid having to take it back to the pawn broker if it's not because it's a sweet laptop at the price I got it for.

Anyone have any ideas? Apart from drivers.
Is the laptop hot to touch?
Is there a buildup of dust or hair in the intakes/exhausts?

Run a benchmarking tool to see if it switches off.
Get a diagnostic tool to check temperatures.

I'm wondering if it's because whoever had this before me had the bright idea of installing DX11 even though it's only a DX10.1 GPU in there...

But no, there's no dust or hair, the laptop stay quiet cool actually. It shuts down as soon as soon as I start Runescape, though before I updated my driver it would last a few seconds.

What's a good benchmarking tool?

EDIT: Just ran the Windows Experience Index and it shutoff just the same while doing the 3D test. I'm going to see if I can roll DX back to 10.1
Have you had a look at the Power Options?

In the control panels? Yes, I can't find anything relating to the GPU :/
It's under power management or power saving or power profiles or something. There is a setting to hibernate, turn off the screen, or shut down the computer depending on certain events. Just turn it all off and try again.

If it keeps happening, perhaps the battery is running down and needs to be replaced?

The battery? I'm running it off the power cord. I'll give those settings a try, if I can find them. Windows 7 is a tad more confusing than XP :/

EDIT: Power settings have nothing :/

EDIT2: Running Runescape in software mode works, but DirectX and OpenGL both cause the computer to suddenly turn off
Do you think that the power supply is not doing it's job?

As in the charging cable? Or the internal PSU?
There's two parts to a computer, hardware and software. I'm going really basic here (even though you probably know this stuff already) but it won't hurt to help someone else out who finds this link via Google or something.

To check for reasons the hardware might be malfunctioning, see if it's overheating or if there's anything blocking the fans (it could be that once the GPU starts working the thing shuts down instantly because it's blocked). You said it was cool so I don't think this is it.

Second reason is software; there could be a conflict within the OS, which only someone using the computer can find. The drivers might be causing the computer to crash, and finally the game might just be the problem.

My advice at this point would be to try some other game, preferably an online game (to check if the browser plug-ins are the problem) along with an on-disk game (to check if the local drivers are the problem). Download some demo off the internet/Steam if you don't have any games that run on the laptop around (if they're too powerful or no disc drive); GameSpot has a nice supply of old demos like CoD 2 and whatnot, and MiniClip.com or Xgenstudios.com would be a nice location for online games. ;)

Well I might give cleaning the vents a go anyway, tomorrow.

As for the drivers, I did a clean install of the updated Nvidia drivers and still the same problem.

I tried the Wolfinstien demo and still the same problem.

If cleaning the vents doesn't work, then maybe I should just take it back, might explain why it was there in the first place.

Could this be caused by a virus?... Anything free out there I can use to get rid of a possible infection like this?

EDIT: Just ran a vacuum over pretty much everything but the screen, no help. Thought it might be worth noting that fan speeds up really fast and when it's at it's fastest it will stay for a few seconds and then the whole thing shuts off.

EDIT2: Just ran SpeedFan, GPU is sitting around 104C, lovely! Now that I pretty much know it's an overheating issue, how to fix?

EDIT3: Now it's shutting off with general use. I'm taking it back.
You get a vapour-locking air compressor, use pointed objects to hold all the fans in position because free spinning fans are motors that will destroy your laptop, blow all the dust out with said air compressor.

I do this all the time at work. Toshiba A100 through to all the current models have this problem.
It's HP though... It doesn't matter, I'm going to take it back, there are better laptops out there anyway for not much more brand new

not to hijack your thread but how do you update your drivers??
