PC reboot on XP loading sceen :(

Hi Guys,

So recently I replaced my power suply after it died and I also got a new monitor with a cheap keyboard and mouse ( microsoft 4000 wired).

This pc sn't used for gaming.

Anyway I turned it on..... and it gets to the XP loading page ( you know with the little progress bar accross the bottom) goes for a little while then reboots.

It then gives me a warning that windows didn't shutdown properly and if I choose start windows normally it just gets to the same place and reboots.

If I startup in safemode its fine.

I've tried numerous restore points but it hasn't resolved the issue.

I'm running XP SP3.

Any ideas? I'm hoping its not hardware but not sure :s.

Hmmm I think I might have this?

Do you know how to boot into safe mode?

In the same screen where you select safe mode there should be another option to "disable automatic reboot".

Once you have done that when it reboots it should first show you a BSOD.

Take note of the 0x000000** code and post it here.

You may also want to try to clean and reseat the ram with a white pencil rubber.

Thanks guys,

Ren-dog. I didn't see an option to "disable automatic reboot" on the menu that had the option for safe boot.

The pc is in my office. I'll have another look when I get a chance and see how it goes and keep u posted.

cheers!
I've also had this happen after coming out of hibernation. I simply pulled the power from the wall, let it sit for a few minutes, spammed the power button clearing out any stored power and it was fine on re-boot.

Not saying this is your fix, your problem could be completely different.

Yeah tried all of that mate.

I'm sure I'll work it out... I might even just install Windows 7

Dun mean s***. you get that option when it doesn't shutdown properly. i mean teh press f8 before it starts loading and open the menu.

this issue has many causes. hardware and software.

You could have dirty contacts on your ram or one corrupt file. try a repair install.
Hey Ren-dog.

I've been rather busy and I've finally had a chance to test what you have suggested. So far no luck. Its getting rather frustrating to be honest with you.

Here are my symptoms.

When the PC boots "most" of the time don't even have access to my keyboard so I can't hit F8 to get into safe mode.

However on one occasion windows reported that my computer hadn't been shutdown properly and my keyboard was working so I managed to get into safe mode ( no option to disable automatic reboot on failure here).

But then through the startup and recovery settings in windows I disabled the "Automatically restart" option.

then I restarted via windows out of safe mode... and SAME THING!.

I have a windows xp cd and can go into repair mode, but I'm not sure what I should be doing.

Any other advice?

cheers.
ok I have made some progress.

I managed to do a windows recovery and now I get a blue screen with the following stop error: 0x0000009C (0x00000004,0x8053F0F0,0B2000000,0X00070F0F
)

It looks like its a hardware problem??

I just put in a new powersupply and monitor after the last two died. I'm hoping that the motherboard isn't damaged aswell. any suggestions on how to test?

cheers.

Says older versions of Windows but... it always does
From the link provided.

"The computer processor detected a hardware error and reported it to Windows NT using the Machine Check Exception (MCE) feature of Pentium processors or the Machine Check Architecture (MCA) feature of some Pentium Pro processors. "

The only problem is the CPU is an AMD 64....

Yeah I noticed that but I'm pretty sure the article is hugely out of date. They haven't been called Pentiums for years and wtf is a Pentium Pro :s

Anyway just a possibility that probably points to hardware. Its unlikely they've greatly changed the error code. Saw some other stuff suggesting registry but from what you said about the PSU... maybe something got damaged?

I remember the pentium pro's... I used to have one....

Yeah I'm thinking something got damaged. I'm just trying to determine what. Its just a work pc at the moment so I don't want to upgrade it if not neccessary.....

anyway I'll continue pluging away at it I guess :s.
