Power Supply

Hey guys,

Just looking at buying new parts for my computer but wasn't sure if power supply is enough. At the moment I have a 420W that came with my Cooler Master case, Gigabyte GA-73VM-S2 Motherboard with built in graphics card, 800mhz kingston RAM, Intel E8400 overclocked to 3.6ghz running at 1.34volts and 160gb HDD with decent dvd burner (forgot name).

Was wondering if my current power supply would be ok if I bought a new graphics card, something along the lines of a 9600. How far can I go with my current power supply.

yes, sure will, just i would recommend get a new one (antec earthwatts 500W/antec neopower 550W) just to make sure that the psu will live a lot longer (:

i suggested those for the quality and not the wattage ;]
So if I leave my PC as it is and stick in a 9600 my PSU should do fine?

Is there a way to check how much power my whole computer is using right now?
use a multimeter? u may be able to see in the bios... but again i wouldnt have a clue D: thats why im going to tafe and doing IT courses
www.tomshardware.com/ there's an article about power consumption that might help you out.
I'm no expert but I do know you never should be stingy with a PSU the cheapo brands will fail pretty quickly regardless of the wattage output they claim.

nice link (:
going to read it .

btw , don't go for a SHAW or Cooler master as a purchased SEPARATE PSU (meaning it didn't come with a case)

antec earthwatts/neopower and the coshair HX-### series are the top out now for the price .
Ahh DAMN YOU MSY! lol i wanted to get a neowatts/earthwatts but they were outta stock on those and just every other PSU i wanted so I had to get an overpriced (i think) Antec Signature 650w, it was $230! Whats so special about this one that makes it nearly $100 more expenisve then the neowatts/earthwatts, both also from Antec
the quality of it not stalling ..

and resistant to power surges i think .

but overall basic quality for it .

it will last a long time ;]

I would not trust a 1000w power supply that only costs that much. If it was a brand I've actually heard of then maybe but I haven't. Maybe its a reputable brand I'm merely ignorant of...
yeah i was thinking that
will probably just go with a corsair 750W sli ready psu.
yeah, that would set you for a while.
i have since been told that it is not a modular power supply
i will see what else is around the same power output and the same money when i go see the shops later.

hrmf, i was set on getting that too
who cares if it's not modular .

just go hide the wires behind the metal plate that's behind the mobo .
ended up getting a thermaltake tough power 650watt psu and it is modular.
and i tried to hide as much as i could behind the mobo and optical drive area.
will post in the hiding cables thread etc
Whyy didn't you get an Antec Neopower 650W !?

wayy better quality for the price.

really?
i was pretty set on getting the corsair 620w but there was none in stock and it wasnt looking like they would be getting any more in.
i just got what my mate who works there thought was the next best one
the neopower is equivilent with the HX-620 .
ah im sorry,
they didnt have the neopower there either.
just some earth 650w thing.

well now this is a goodnight from me.
goodnight!
tim to go do other stuff than surf on a forum
lol, night .

well that's a crap computer place ...

The 9600GT will run off any 6-pin PCI-E connector or a dual molex to 6-pin adaptor. It's a good low-end card that drains little power. Personally, my brother and i both have 750W Titan PSUs. We got them for the wattage of course but also cause they have the necessary ampage to drive my HD4850 and my brothers HD4870X2 2Gb graphics cars.
do these not look the smex?

who is that aimed at?
Also, why would you recommend a PSU that you have had one fail on you?
