Tax Time Upgrade.

So first up I'm a noob when it comes to installing new hardware components :D so.. yeah :)

Basicly What I want to do Is replace my 450w Piece of Sh.. power supply and my beastly POS GT220.

I've been having ALOT of issues with my GT220... A hell of alot of system crashes during the Starcraft 2 Beta and during the Battliefield BC2 Beta.

So the Plan is to get the following..

A Corsair HX-1000 1000W PSU for future upgrades.

And im unsure of which G card to get

Either a Gigabyte GF GTX460 1G OC umart.com.au/...

Or a Gainward GTX 460 1G D5 umart.com.au/...

Also wondering if I should just get the one or get two and run them in SLI.

And since I've never built a system and have no friggin idea what i'm doing can I basicly just take the old crap out, put the new parts in and plug the old power connectors and what-not into them?

And also, Is anyone else using their Tax Return to upgrade? :)

Yeh, pretty much take out old crap, install new.
Then uninstall old Graphics card drivers nd install new one. But if i were you i'd do a complete fresh install of windows ;)
Hrmm not to keen on doing a fresh install xD Alot of backing up and finding install CD's to do :P

No need to backup. Simply buy a new hard drive! They're amazingly cheap these days. 500GB for less than $100!

Get an enclosure for it, install Windows on your new HDD, then start copying the files you want to keep from your old drive to the new one. Or leave them there, whatever works for you.
Ended up ordering my parts from PCCG, should be here in two days :D

what did ya buy? :P
Corsair HX-1000 1000W and a Gainward GTX 460 1G

Just pulled my G card and PSU out and all seems to be fine. Looks like with the new psu all i have to do is plug One 12 pin or whatever it is into the Mobo and 4/6 pins? into my 2 HDs and 1 into my DVD drive. Then looks like I also have to plug a 4 or 8 into my mobo up near the cpu... and possibly plug something into the graphics card? I have no idea xD haha.

Also of note, ran dxdiag and it says I'm running DX11 but GT220's dont support DX11 do they?

Get a 5770 ;)
Am not an ATI fan xD Although they are purddy. In the future I'll get a second GTX460, Read somewhere that they run better than a 480 in SLI

Edit: Ohhh also, I have No idea what Mo/bo I have or wether my ram DDR2 or DDR3 I assume that it's DDR3, Ran DxDiag doesnt tell me :( Any way to find out?

I am getting a portable hard drive and finally a new router to utilise my ADSL2 speeds :)

Has anyone got this router? www.umart.com.au/...

The only reason I'm choosing that is that I'm used to D-Link, plus it has VoIP capabilities.

Otherwise I might go with Netgear as Skarteh has mentioned www.umart.com.au/...

Go with the Netgear they are the best brand out there. I haven't paid tax in 4 years and I dont get into trouble for it either.
@Daseti get the program CPUID (just google it for the link)
it'll tell you everything you need/want to know and a little of something you had no idea about.
Cheers doyl i'll check it out after work.

Jub I have that netgear router that skarteh mentioned to you, It's damn reliable I have had no issues with it at all.

Edit: Actually did it now, didn't take long to DL.

So it is DDR3 like I guessed, 4GB with a DRAM Frequency of 666.2, The sticks look like cheap crap since they're not branded at all So that will be a future upgrade. And the NB freq is 2131.7MHz

Not sure what any of that means :D

ReEdit: If I bothered to look under the SPD tab before I posted I would've noticed that the Manufacturer was Transcend Information... Never heard of those guys.

What would be the best DDR3 Tripple Channel RAM upgrade?

From memory, you've got an intel i5. Triple channel RAM isn't for you. Look for Dual channel. So you could go to 6 GB of RAM if you can find it, or 8 would be the next step up.
Thanks Das - did you find the router easy to set up? Is it plug and play?
Yeah it's pretty much plug and play, you go to www.router.net or something, Or you use the Install CD which sets it all up, I can help you out with it if need be.

Thanks doles, Dual channel it is.
i dont understand why you bought a HX-1000. You could get a Antec TruePower Quattro 1200W or Enermax Revolution 85+ 1050W for around that price. Well you bought it anyways so theres no going back anyway

And i don't understand why you ruined your HAF and didn't leave the job to a professional to do it for you [WTF]
Quattro's = crap
Enermax = good but hideous period browny reddish plugs
HX1000 = pure sex, good cables, better amps than any others that noob here suggested
And no one has mentioned how insanely overkill a HX1000 is :p

Daseti said: Ended up ordering my parts from PCCG, should be here in two days

2 days :/ who told you that?
Yes, but isn't anything most of our users do with their hardware overkill? :P
Usually that overkill gives you performance :p buying a PSU twice as big as you need gives you nuzzing!
Haha yeah... xD Just love the look of the PSU and I hate money... Plus I wont have to upgrade it for like... ever.

I will probably be getting a second GTX460 just so I can brag about 2-way SLI to all my mates...

As for delivery I got it express posted, Bought it from PCCG in melbourne and I live in QLD, So i'll be getting it either today or tomorrow.

Plus I intend on installing about 6000 Fans [Derp]

Daseti said:A Corsair HX-1000 1000W PSU for future upgrades

I guess everyone missed the words FUTURE UPGRADE! I don't need 1050watts to run all my gear but if I decide to get another card later I'm ready to go. Once you have all your cables hidden away and all tidy it can be a chore swapping power supplies.
Oh Express :D

You're gonna need 6000 fans! You could run 2 480's on that easily :P The 460 is actually lower power than the others because its a GF104 card. Really epic value too, its fps per $ spent is even higher than the mighty 5770. Though thats in UniEngine so basically nothing but tessellation.
