The Overclocking thread

You can talk about Overclock's in this thread.

This may seem stupid but.. What does it mean to overclock? I'm interested in increasing my Ghz. But what does it mean?
It's a method of increasing the speed your processor runs at.

Is overclocking dangerous? do the risks out weigh the reward
Does it require certain requirements?Like i heard in a Video that only some Motherboards can get overclocked.

It can be if you have insufficient cooling or put the core voltage to high.

The rewards of overclocking cant really be noticed by your common computer user, it is mainly for benchmarking... very little reward is gained in gaming because its mostly dependant on the gpu. you can overclock gpu's but the reward is VERY slim...

In the end, you can do it, but sometimes it can cause errors and overheating issues, so get a good cooler and cross your fingers.
Reading that makes me not want to overclock.
my 720 i have now i got up to 3.2Ghz from 2.8 without changing volts on ma stock cooler

i got a black edition so i just had to change the multiplier to 15.5 i think

ima get a 965 though and a aftermarket cooler
Oh god...
You a silly bitch Sacred as if not use a cooler!!

Little reward...?

You do notice it in general applications, programs load up faster, you boot up quicker, information gets processed quicker etc etc. Do a decent overclock on your i5 then you'll see.

you overclocked your i7 right guyver?
Yeah you notice it when starting Windows and loading in games. Makes a massive difference. Pretty much anything that loads, does so faster. Encoding and ripping and stuff is faster also

but sif they are gonna get a decant oc on their brand new pc when they are new to pc's. you need a fairly decant oc to see any performance increase. just going up form 2.8 to 3 does nothing noticeable. (i should know)

He wanted to know the risks so i told him. i spose i should have said, "the difference isnt that noticeable unless its a a fairly significant oc like 500mhz or more."

from 2.6 to 3.8

And do not do what sacred has done and oc with stock. ALWAYS USE A 3RD PARTY COOLER WHEN OVERCLOCKING! (some minor oc's are fine like 5mhz but anything more is risking to much)
2.6 to 3.0 I noticed a difference, 2.6 to 3.8 I noticed a big difference.
but keep in mind your running 6gb ram and a bunch of raptors and a ssd.
geesh its not like i didnt do any research on it first
I'm not even satisfied with the performance of stock coolers when its on normal frequency lol

I hate how high the stock i7/i5 coolers allow the cpu to get at max load. Mine sits on the stock coolers idle temp when I'm on full load 1200mhz faster

2.66 Ghz, stock cooler would hit 80 on full load
3.80 Ghz, Coolermaster V8 only hits 60 on full load

Considering my voltage is unchanged I'm probably going to get a lot more like out of my CPU even though its going 1200mhz faster

I'm not and I notice it all the time You even get an FPS boost in Source games or other CPU heavy games.

key word mate...
"difference"
you kept stock voltage for a oc that high?

Stock coolers suck on idle let alone load

I will record some temps then compare them to the h50 when i install that... when i get it off my mother
the 920's can run pretty fast on lower voltages than the stock.

im gonna go read about oc'ing my i5.

I'll get the fire extinguisher

Just joking, it should be pretty straight forward to get a mild overclock out of it.
