Windows 7 - extremely long log in times

I have been suffering from this problem all year.

On a fresh boot it can take a long time to load up the log in screen and even longer to get to the desktop once my password is typed in. Generally I see a plain white space while I wait for explorer and just a small number of programs to start afterward.

My computer hardware has only been getting faster this year and it has happened on two installations. I am smart about how I have my OS set up. There's no abundance of crappy software and I only allow a minimal amount of programs and services to load when my computers turns on. The only way I can overcome this is to hibernate instead. In the Windows Experience Index the drive has dropped from 5.9 to 5.8. Small drop but does indicate something is going on here.

Two weeks ago I performed a defrag and disk optimisation (moved all the data to the outer edge of the disk) and have not seen much improvement. I bought another harddrive and moved a lot of data off it just to help it breathe more, still it occurs.

I have run chkdsk /f already and there are no errors reported. I am going to leave it running chkdsk /r today but only as a last resort because I know it is going to take ages.

I am stumped. I have no idea if this is a driver, a piece of software or a hardware issue. The fresh install I did back in June lasted maybe a month before the problem became severe again.

tl;dr version: log in takes a long time, could be hardware, software or a driver problem. Happened on two installations so far on different hardware. So far the harddrive checks out to be healthy.

Has anyone else found a similar or the same issue? What have you do to overcome it?

Have you got it set to boot on multiple cores in msconfig? It might not solve your problem interesting to see if it makes a difference.

That is one of the first things I set up when I install windows. I might check to see if it is a piece of software causing the problem by disabling everything in msconfig. I decided to leave the chkdsk /r till last because of how long that would take compared to other operations.
