Indie Game Chat

Let's face it - the AAA titles are a little dry at the moment, and I'm pretty sure other than Mass Effect 3, most people are still playing the staples of CoD and BF3.

There are so many indie projects across ALL platforms - there's no way I can cover them all on my own.

So let's open a thread where we can talk about, share and educate each other on what indie games we are playing at the moment, what we love and what we don't.

Right now I'm really into three indie titles.

Journey on the PS3 which is utterly amazing! If you own a PS3 take the plunge, you won't be disappointed. You can check out MMGN's full review here - ps3.mmgn.com/...

Lone Survivor which is currently on PC and Mac. It's a side-scrolling survival horror in a 16-bit (SNES, MegaDrive) graphical interface. It's really creepy, disorientating, hard and enjoyable. It's only $10 too, which nets you both the PC and Mac version. There's a thread on the PC channel at the moment if anyone is interested.

Finally the other game that has taken my fancy is Super Lemonade Factory on iOS. I'm working on a review for the Apple channel at the moment, and even though it's been out for a while, you should definitely look into it.

So what indie games are you all getting into. If you find that a certain game takes a deep interest for you, don't be scared to make a dedicated thread!
The last Indie game I enjoyed was Hard Reset on PC. Need to explore that scene more.
@Pact so glad you loved Bastion, better than a full studio release that is for sure!

@Guyver Hard Reset was bad ass! You would probably enjoy Wrack, check out the preview when it goes live today.

I just finished Analogue: A Hate Story last night. Well, 2/5 endings.

Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but I found it enjoyable despite the target audience most likely being 20-something-year-old women.
I haven't even heard of that game @Silence can you post some links or screens?

Pretty shit news today - the Victorian Government cancelled all funding for indie game development. Considering Victoria accounts for over 50% of local development, that is going to be a huge blow!
It's a visual novel that hit Steam a few days ago. It's just a series of yes/no questions, some command line stuff in a terminal, and reading diary entries/letters of a now empty space-colonisation ship.

If you aren't put off by a bunch of Korean names and complex family trees, it's a very good read. It delves into some pretty dark themes stemmed from some ruthless and archaic gender roles, as well as questions into morality.

store.steampowered.com/...
Wow, that's short-sighted of them. :/
That actually sounds pretty cool @Silence I might check it out wen I have some spare cash!

EDIT: Here's my preview of Wrack, really awesome game - pc.mmgn.com/...
Just finished off Digital: A Love Story by the same developer. A bulletin board love story text adventure of sorts =p

Is Wrack similar to Hard Reset? If so I'm in.
@Guyver if you like the original DOOM then you'll love it. It's that kind of hardcore shooter.

Sounds like something I'd go for. Some times you got to play some "if it moves kill it" kind of games.
That's it. It feels exactly like DOOM, which isn't a bad thing considering the history and experience behind the game.

I just put a preview up for Home, a pretty sweet little indie game from Benjamin Rivers - pc.mmgn.com/...

Check out the pre-order deal - the old school collector's edition is freaking awesome!
Playing through Sword & Sworcery on PC for a review. I loved the iOS version, but something about the PC version is a little more magical.

I bought the iOS version but have not played it at all. If this is the case, I may get it for PC and play it here instead.
i brought
Warlock Master of the Arcane (pretty much Civ with wizards) not exactly indie but has a indie price
So the indie gaming reddit is pretty average, so making an attempt to start a better one. If you love indie gaming and want to jump into a community then head on over!

Will they ever update their site format over there, looks like it's from the 90s :*O
So Hotline Miami is the latest to take my fancy. Reminds me of the first GTA or True Lies on the SNES pc.mmgn.com/...
Anyone seen that game Miasmata on the Steam frontpage?

Looks interesting and creepy as hell, I just dunno if I want to take the plunge with Scribblenauts coming out tomorrow :S
I saw Miasmata and Stealth Bastard. Stealth Bastard is pretty fun, they had a demo early in development.

I'm very very interested in Miasmata. It's also being sold at GOG.com for the same price. The Steam forum reports framerate problems for a lot of people, which the devs have acknowledged and are working on.

Edit: Stuff it, buying Miasmata. I'll tell you guys what I think.
Seeing as I don't have the internet allowance to download many AAA (or even A) titles, I've been playing a lot of smaller games that I've picked up and never looked at.

Vessel
Absolutely love the idea of creating automatons with Mario's waterpack, but I just couldn't motivate myself to continue once the game introduced pack upgrades. It just seemed like a pointless feature that a weird complexity to a game that didn't need it.

The Dream Machine
As much as I would like to continue with this PnC, the clay faces have me creeped the hell out. Seriously, I'm scared to boot the game up again to finish the first episode.

Larva Mortis
Super generic, top-down room-clearing-RPG. I was bored out of my brains after the third 'mission'.

Swords & Soldiers
I've never been an RTS player, but if anything was going to sway me, it'd be this. Forgiving learning curve, simple goals, and it's colourful to boot. That said, I gave up pretty quickly.

Castle Crashers
Classic beat-em-up with RPG elements. Up until I got to a boss that just kept pummelling my ass no matter what I tried, I was really enjoying this. If it wasn't for it's flash-inspired look, I probably wouldn't find it nearly as charming enough to warrant a retry sometime down the track.

Rochard
I want to like Rochard, I really do. I had played through (what felt like) most of it already and decided to come back to it and hopefully finish it off. It's probably because I was using a controller instead of a KB+M, but I was finding that I would be fumbling about and under a lot of pressure when facing off against only two or three enemies-- something that I don't think was supposed to be happy. It left enough of a sour taste in my mouth to RQ, possibly for good.

Frozen Synapse
I knew that RTS wasn't my thing, so I decided to try something a little closer to my TBS comfort zone. This. Game. Is. Complicated. As. Hell. Seriously, I'd never found factoring enemy movements into my turn's decisions to be such a hard process until I tried this out. The simple fact that there are people playing this (not sure if current) competitively is enough to earn a heap of respect from me.

Limbo
I FINALLY FINISHED A GAME. It gave me chills all the way through, but its focus on integrating the themes of the background into engaging platforming helped sooth my heart. The music and the atmosphere sure did an amazing job at creeping me the hell out without much trouble.

Adam's Venture
Very short Indiana Jones-y adventure game with an occasional puzzle board to break up gameplay. I would not recommend it.

Puzzle Bots
An adorable little PnC. So-lame-it's-good story, interesting gimmick, and average dialogue. I think I liked it more than I should have.

Awesomenauts
I find the simplified MOBA-styled platforming to be quite fun, despite how amazingly inept I am. Also, it's reeks of delicious 90s cheese.

Offspring Fling
Puzzle-platformer where you throw your babies at buttons. It's surprising how easy it was for me to spend so much time failing the one level without RQ-ing. But I did eventually, 10 or so levels from the end. I'll most likely return to this.

Shatter
It's Arkanoid with a vaccuum/leafblower attachment. Fun for a few minutes at a time.

Closure
Awesome premise of using light to manipulate the level, but it's too creepy for me to sink in the time I know it deserves :(
Hell Yeah!
Very fun slashy-bang-bang platformer. I like the over-the-top silliness of it all, however the Warioware-like finishers start to become more of a chore after a few monsters. As interesting and unique as some of them are, I'm not looking forward to doing 100 of those. Awesome soundtrack, though.

Shank 2
More of the same, really. I really enjoyed the first Shank, but it seems as if they forget why he's going on his killing spree midway through the game. It's not like it was an award-winning story to begin with, but at least you knew what was motivating Shank throughout his bloody rampage in the first game.

Snapshot
A very interesting and unique puzzle-platformer where you use your camera to make boxes and platforms disappear and reappear at will. A very good little title that teaches you just enough at a time to let you think up new ways to make use of your power. If you strip Portal of its story and leave only is puzzles, you'll pretty much have this.
I've been grabbing a lot (well more than I usually get on PC) of Indie games on the Wii U's eStore. I pretty much have bought all of what is available right now. Nano Assault has turned out to be one of my all time favorite shooter em ups, also enjoying Little Inferno and Puzzle.

I did grab Awesomenauts today from Steam so I'll give that a crack soon as well.
edit: My bad I got mixed up with Psychonauts [Facepalm]
Just finished 30 Flights of Loving twice (once with the commentary) and Gravity Bone.

Yeah, it seems more like a tech demo/proof of concept than a game, but my first playthrough left quite a strong impression on me despite how short it was. The commentary really does show a lot of insight as to how deliberate certain parts of the story telling is, especially when it was all done with the environment alone (not including the montage)
That's okay, Psychinauts is even more awesome than awesomenauts.
