We've had many threads involving NRL, but never a general discussion and with the trials starting. What better time to make one.

I'm watching Dragons vs Souths now... only because they're not televising the good game, being Roosters and Tigers

Picks for the year my fellow New South Welshmen? Premiers, Wooden Spoons? If I had to put money on it, I'd go Roosters this year, Tigers will still definitely win though, we're leading the Roosters 12-6 and it's only ten minutes in. [MOG]

Well there's no doubt about it now. NRL is officially the most powerful sporting code in Australia.

THE National Rugby League climbed to the top of the nation's TV sporting ladder yesterday with a monumental $1.025 billion deal that trumps the game's rival code AFL.

The broadcast rights deal granted to Channel Nine and Fox Sports sees the NRL worth an incredible $1275 per minute on TV screens - as opposed to the AFL's $1170 per minute - cementing league as the most powerful sporting code in the country.

An analysis of the two codes and their TV deals shows that, while each NRL game gets $15,000 less per match than AFL, rugby league over 80 minutes is more valuable to broadcasters than Aussie rules over 100 minutes.

NRL may have more TV rights money but there is no way they are more powerful than the AFL.

The NRL don't even like having a team in Melbourne, if they could they would just stick to QLD and NSW.

So... Basically NRL = more money = power = NRL.

Its in a business sense.

Plus NRL is not just watched just in Australia but also New Zealand which have a strong audience and in State of Origin which attracts alot of audience around the world especially in UK and PNG that's why NRL is worth alot in broadcasting rights.
