So I have heard that tonight or tomorrow, DICE is going to announce some news regarding BF3.

And I have also heard that this news will be about cross-platform gaming. Note that I didn't say multi-platform, I said cross-platform. :D

If they go ahead with this, it will be quite interesting. I haven't heard much of cross-platform initiatives since Microsoft called off their experiment after they found that mediocre PC gamers smashed great console gamers thanks to the advantages of keyboard and mouse.

If this does go ahead, though, then the push for first-party keyboard and mouse control on consoles will be very strong indeed, and consoles will come that much closer to becoming little PCs. ^_^

Its not. Its literally exactly what I was banging on about when they first started saying they would make PC lead platform. Its just talk because thats the new thing to do now, pretend you give a shit about PC again, but nothing has changed. Its actually MORE console-esque than BC2 if you can believe that...

I've been saying it too. :P You hear all these devs say, "Consoles lack the grandeur of PC," and "PC is important to us," but we're not gonna get anywhere with AAA developers. The future of PC gaming is well and truly with indies.

Indies may make silly decisions and sometimes buggy games (like Red Orchestra 2), but they make up for it in depth and moddability. Sometimes I look at the low player numbers and lack of polish for RO2 and feel disappointed (especially compared to BF3), but all it takes is a nice server for me to feel good about it again.

"Fixed" the mouse problem. Apparently its made much worse if you use high DPI low in game sensitivity. So basically because I run 10,000 DPI it was colossally bad. I've dropped it to 2000 DPI and increased the in game sensitivity, and now its fine. But thats completely shit because I didn't buy a 11,400 DPI mouse to play at 2000 [Facepalm]

Anyway the game is fun, I am definitely enjoying the single player campaign which I'm playing through on Hard. Problem is, its basically a less shit version of MW2 which is pretty disappointing. The damage model is much better than BC2 where the enemies will drop from a couple of chest shots and they are pretty fun to shoot. Problem is they're exactly like COD; endless and retarded and they will keep coming until you reach point X. Thats pathetic and has always been a retards way of making the game difficult but whatever.

What really pisses me off is this new thing consoles have given us where you press some button to do some action outside the realm of your normal controls. This happens constantly and makes you lose control. The worst part is these stupid hand to hand battles, heres the worst of it I've found so far:

You're infiltrating a bank in some reverse version of Jason Bourne escaping the American embassy. First you stand at the base of the ladder and lose control while your squad mate boosts off you and onto a higher ladder. He then drops the ladder down and you perform the worlds slowest ascent up the ladder. He then jumps from the railing through a bathroom window (or hole in the wall being that theres no glass...). Shortly after you are expected to do the same and its pretty much a press space to win kind of deal and you get to watch yourself jump through the whole and awkwardly snap into position behind your squad made.

Then out of another cubicle comes a durka durka! My immediate reaction is to press the melee button but of course this is some scripted bullshit and I've just missed the time to press some button to auto-kill the dude and he pwns us both. No biggie, I'll just spawn climbing into the window and see what button I'm supposed to pre... Oh **** off I have to do this ladder boosting shit all over again... So I do.

Take 2: So I wait to be told what key to press this time. It says press E, so I do, and my character runs up and starts trying to put a knife into the guy while my squad mate has him in an evidently ineffectual sleeper hold. Then he starts turning the knife on me, and up flashes a picture of the mouse... Now heres where shit starts to get awkward for PC. My mouse has seven ****ing buttons. So as I only have a second to press the right button, I press the melee button. My knife button. Because I"m trying to kill him with a knife. Apparently this is a bad idea, because durkules the mighty turns the knife on me and stabs me and back to the slow ladder of doom I go.

Take 3: I figure I cannot be ****ed finding out stage by stage what ridiculous button combination it takes to perform the auto kill of this mighty steed of a man. This time, I press E, Space and all the buttons on my mouse at once continually until the stupid thing is over, and it works perfectly. Effectively you just need to simultaneously press every button the game asks you to press at any point continuously until the interactive cutscene is over...

So basically the game rewards me for just pressing a whole shitload of keys at once until its over... Why the **** do they put these interactive cutscenes into games? Does anyone think these are any good?

Interestingly, most games with quicktime events make you lose for pressing the wrong button, and not just for not pressing the right one, so in most games your 'mash everything' approach wouldn't have worked.

And no, no one thinks quicktime events are good. [Facepalm] The entirety of God of War is basically built around quicktime events and I thought it was stupid and never got into it. But console gamers must love them, because every console gamer seems to love God of War.

But yeah on average, I can see this being true.

As I said in the RO2 forum when someone asked about playing with a controller, I can't see it being too much of a disadvantage. In twitch games like UT or Quake you'd get owned, pure and simple. But in games like RO2, what matters most is positioning and surprise. If you can get the drop on some dudes from the sides or from behind, then you can be using a controller and a revolver and you'll still win.

Yeah I've seen how you play. You are not outskilling anyone, you just camp relentlessly. Anyone can do that, it doesn't make you good. Pretty much just means you are amused far more easily if you can sit around that much.

There was talk of this at the start of development (as shown in my OP), but I haven't heard anything come of it. I'm assuming that it was either a rumour, or else it didn't turn out very well and was scrapped.

It remains in BF3 as Battlelog, which is itself cross-platform, but only allows you to join games on the same platform.
