Fallout: New Vegas General Discussion

i have been searching but couldn't find a general discussion about this game so i thought i'd create one (if thats ok)
i am a fan of Bethesda software games so i can't wait to get my hands on a copy of this, trailers and teasers all look awesome so im pretty certain it would be just as good, if not better than fallout 3... anyone here have this yet?
Heeey, I found a fix for the stuttering that you guys should be interested in.

www.newvegasnexus.com/...

Download the .dll from there, shut down Steam, put it in your 'steamapps/common/fallout new vegas' folder and restart the game. When it detects your graphics card settings anew, set it to whatever you like, then start the game. I used to get massive stutter just walking around on Low settings, and now I don't dip below 60 FPS with almost a dozen NPCs fighting on-screen in Ultra High!

Basically it forces the game to use DX9, bypassing the engine's half-assed DX11 support.

Note that this fix doesn't work with dual monitors, and if you try to run it with dual monitors the game will CTD. Fixing this is easy! Hit Windows+P, then click Computer Only to force the computer to only output to the default screen. Now the game will run.
Using DX9 did you get any less render quality

Well HDR is not as flashy, that's about all I can notice. It should be using Shader 2.0 and not Shader 3.0, but I can't notice anything different or worse at all. It really does look identical to the original to me, although what's not identical is the massive improvement in FPS. :D

There are several version of this file roaming around now, so before you use it, please check it not only with your virus scanner, but with online virus scanners like Kaspersky and Virus Total. Here is the online report from Virus Total, which shows it free of malware: www.virustotal.com/...

UPDATE: Hold on the fix, I am testing out the d3d9.dll that comes with a normal DX installation. This may be a better fix.

UPDATE #2: The original fix is still faster. I don't know what's different about it, but with the legit D3D9.dll I was only getting a max of 35 FPS, while with the fix I've supplied, I was getting 60+ no problem.
Thanks for the heads up Desi.

I'll try out the fix in a sec.
sorry dude u lost me... which one was the better one?

So, the fix that gets downloaded, not the one that you fetch from your DirectX folder. The fix also works with the newest NVIDIA driver, 260.89.
uhhh lol thanx the only trouble im having (not really that annoying)but there are small areas of the screen that flicker sometimes white sometimes black...

Yeeeah, I get that too, but only white flares. I think it's to do with transparency multisampling, because if you look at the gaps between the slats on a wooden trailer/cart there is white pixel artifacting there too. Still, I'd rather see this than try to play a game at 25 FPS.

Of course, I'd much prefer having a game that works properly.
Hey desi, what GPU are you running and whats your monitor size?
Seriously can't these guys ever make a game that works out of the box? Puts me off from buying it.

1GB o/c GTX 460, 2x monitors, one on 1920x1080 and the other on 1280x1024.

It's the lousy bloody engine they're using. It's like it's from the Dark Ages, and no one could read Middle English well enough to optimise it.
www.youtube.com/... this is the reason it worth buying ^_^

Yeah I agree, while it made oblivion look so fancy, its almost 5 years old now and in need of replacing.

The Engine itself is becoming quite dated, it hasn't been optimised since Oblivion's release. They have to buil deach game from scratch, but they never touch the engine. @_@.
I am restarting with a whole bunch of mods to balance the game and to make it harder still. I felt it was absurd that I was running around with 90 stims, 30 super-stims and 500 of each ammo upon hitting level 14. You can download mods from www.newvegasnexus.com... and there is a fair number there already. I'll come back with a complete mod list in a new reply (for maximum space) so you can try it yourselves, too.
Okay, first off, use 7-Zip because it rocks, it's free, and won't hassle you every time you open an archive. I list the mod name and a short description. All mods below were downloaded from www.newvegasnexus.com... and you can search for them there to download them.

1) Better Binoculars: Increases the bino zoom from 4x (or so) to 6x. Much more useful.

2) HarderCore Pack: Removes levelled loot/monster lists (powerful weapons and strong enemies available right from the start). Makes stims very rare, ups damage to everyone, gives chems weight, slower levelling and fewer skill points (INT now very important). Can repair weapons and armor with lots of junk and matching caliber weapons, can dehydrate and starve faster. Check the readme, it's huge.

3) Bottle That Water: When you drink a bottle of water you get an empty bottle which you can fill from any water source.

4) Carrying Capacity Increase: 340 pounds at 7 STR.

5) MTUI: Shrinks fonts and expands menus to make UI less sucky.

6) No Autoaim: Removes random tendency for bullets to curve towards a target, independent of weapon accuracy.

7) No Perk Requirements (ONLY the No Level Req pack): As long as you have the skills required, you can get the perk.

8) Perk Every Level: Doubles the perk frequency. We'll see how it works out, seeing as skill points are reduced by the HarderCore mod.

9) Pipboy Light: Increases range of Pipboy light to 2x.

10) Realistic Death and Dismemberment Physics: Pet peeve; things fly metres backwards when shot or punched.

11) Realistic Headshots Hardcore: Almost everything dies when its head is crippled — including the player!

12) Remove Compass Markers: Removes all markers on the compass except Friend/Foe indicators. Explore to find locations, use the map to find quest objectives.

13) Radio Active Channel Extender: Adds more songs to a new radio station, including the ability to add your own songs.

UPDATE: In a happy coincidence, one of these mods (not sure which) seems to have increased my FOV as well. Always good!
Wow that mods been made already? That's awesome I was pretty much waiting to buy this game because I figured i'd let the bugs get fixed and wait until the hardcore mods were made :D

Give me a rundown of the HC changes :) also weapon accuracy, i had to alter that in F3 because the hunting rifle missed from a metre away etc... This mod fix that or do I need another mod again?

I don't use VATS often so I like the guns to be a bit realistic too.
Well the No Autoaim mod takes care of the stupid autoaim, so you can actually target limbs now. Weapon accuracy is now much better than FO3; with my Small Guns skill at 15 I am able to take a coyote in the head from medium range, but naturally damage, range and accuracy are lower compared to higher levels.

Most important HC changes from the HarderCore Pack (on top of the starving/thirst/sleep etc added by the default Hardcore Mode) are:

1) Finding ammo and stims in the Wasteland is much rarer. In places where Stims where hand-placed in a container by the devs, those Stims are now gone.

2) More XP required per level, fewer skill points given per level (high INT and the Educated perk are important).

3) Can repair objects with repair-oriented junk (duct tape, wonderglue, whetstone, wrench, hammer etc).

4) Can repair objects with items that share similarities (repair a 5.56 rifle with any other gun chambered in 5.56, for example).

5) High-level items and very strong monsters are now always present in the gameworld, without needing you to reach a certain level for them to appear.

6) You dehydrate, starve and require sleep sooner.

7) Merchants sell less ammo and medical equipment.

8) Stims, Chems and Skill Magazines now weigh something (I think Stims are 0.5 pounds).
I've only played maybe 5-6 hours so far, I haven't had a lot of time this weekend, I've made it up to novac and I got a pistol called "that gun" from the guy in the dinosaur, it uses 5.56 ammo and looks like Deckard's gun in Bladerunner. Anyone else got it?

Hehe I am glad you got the reference. It's a gun that appeared in Fallout 1 and 2, but chambered in .223 originally. In those games it was one of the best pistols, but here it's a bit meh.
i gotta get this game
loved no. 3

That makes sense that it uses 5.56 ammo them, 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington are basically the same cartridge, the only difference is that 5.56 is the military specification which has a thicker shell and a military grade cordite explosive.

The thing is, why did they chamber it in 5.56 now? There is still .223 ammo in the game.
I really, really like the Realistic Headshots Hardcore mod. It makes the game more satisfying and a bit simpler (because enemies can no longer shrug off headshots, they go down more easily as long as I can penetrate their armor) while paradoxically making it more challenging (I actually died a few times in the shootout at Goodsprings because the Powder Gangers got a few lucky headshots on me).
Damnit Desi you're making me get a Fallout craving now [Rage] I'm unnaturally attracted to games where I have to scrabble around looking for shit to stay alive and every bullet counts so getting a brilliant headshot to save yourself from using further ammo is immensely rewarding.... etc...

I liekek! Think I'll be getting the US version though. Bit pricey on AU Steam :E
