Well a trailer has finally been released, the start is mostly concept art in motion but it does eventually show you the game engine running:

I know theres a few GW fans lurking around here so what are your thoughts guys?

Personally I'm a bit disappointed with the graphics I sort of expected better... as is it only looks marginally better than Guild Wars did (which is not to say its bad) but yeah it looks pretty samey. One thing that looks fantastic are the level designs, some amazing looking stuff there, they've really gone to town on the concept art and brought it to life.

I'm worried about this game... I hope its a return to form. I miss how brilliant Prophecies was.

IMO For a Beta its actually quite fun, though i would expect quite abit of polish by the time its released

Honestly after being dissapointed with nearly MMO I have ever player, I think GW2 is finally one I properly sink my teeth into. Its not perfect, no game ever is but I am really loving the beta so far. If you haven't tried WvW grab some friends and try it, it is one of the biggest highlights.

Nevermind, I went digging in my emails..

I never got the email, but I managed to download the beta anyway. You don't need it, as long as you activate your game code.
e: we have an MMGN guild on Scavenger's Cause. Just me and Doyl atm though.

Well I got to level 12 (I think..)

I'm hoping there are more skills to unlock than the grid that is visible now. If not... Well shit. It's probably 1/20th of the amount you could get in Guild Wars...

It is fun after a while, and you do get into the big "world events" but ultimately this game needs to be played with friends. I know I would be having a hell of a lot more fun if I was playing with a group of mates.

I'm ok edyth it changing if it moves forward. Not a big fan of the newer games having less features and such. Huge amounts of skill options was sort of Guild Wars' thing

I just changed my elementalists weapon from a wand to a dagger and it changed my entire skill set!

Yeah, every combination of weapon has new moves for the skills 1-5. Then you use Skill Points in 6-0. There's a lot more depth than people realise, and it also relies on like, understanding how to play your weapons.

Also, I'm level 22. >_>

Only skills 1-5 Doyl and you don't select these skills, they are fixed based on your weapon. So instead of choosing 8 skills from a pool of like 300, you choose 4 from a pool of like 30. Also there appear to be less weapon classes. I only ever saw shortbow/longbow as opposed to shortbow/longbow/hornbow/flatbow.

So yeah, it is very dumbed down.

Are there even dual professions? Didn't seem like it...

Edit: I woulda be very surprised if they left the skill pool as small as that though. I think it would be more like they will limit the amount available until you are x level, then open up more. I bloody hope do anyway because there is crap all available for the ranger and very few are any good. At least there are Traps still.

Did you get those 300 or so skills to choose from in vanilla gw out through expansions?
I never played gw1 enough to see more than a dozen or so.

Honestly, comparing it to GW1 is silly. They're pretty different. The real similarity is the setting.

Vanilla had heaps. More than triple what I can see in GW2 per profession.

Take my word for it dude, theres not anywhere near as many. It might change of course, im hoping more will become available at certain levels but yeah atm theres crap all.

Hoping you can change the weapon combat skills too, otherwise I can see any interrupt skills on the ranger. I used to always have 2 on my bar to shut down casters using big skills.

Actually there is a hell of a lot worrying me tbh but like Doyl said I'm trying to treat it like it's not a sequel as it really isn't. Theres enough similarity that I can enjoy effectively a totally different MMO than what I'm used to without feeling out of my comfort zone which is cool.

Just keep that mindset up. They might be pulling a diablo 3 with streamlining the whole skills feature but it's going to be a case of wait and see.
Since there isn't an actual release date yet who knows how much will change from now till then.
How many skills in gw1 were a different skill but similar to other skills? Could it be a case of upgrading skills rather than purchasing/learning new ones?
So far it's still seeming better than most other mmos.

I'm still excited.
I like mmos but i hate paying a monthly fee. Any time I've started a game with someone we always fall out of sync because either one of us doesn't get another month or so and then we just lose the motivation. Having an always there mmo will make it that much more like a normal game.
Besides, the wife has promised me that she will pay it with me. She better not back down from that promise [Shifty]

I know I'll always have people to play with if I get it, if not you man beasts my friend from Canadia plays it, she's the one who convinced me to buy the first game and will probably be on my back if I don't get the 2nd.

But I'm still on the fence about it. But knowing me, I'll end up buying it after release.
