Kickstarter... Bringing back awesome games.

Hey guys,

It seems i'm fairly new to the party, but I've discovered all these kickstarter projects from developers and I think it's a wonderful idea. I gladly contributed to the Double Fines new Point and Click adventure and today I donated for Shadowrun Returns.

I think this in an amazing new process and it allows developers to get rid of the middle man and especially greedy publishers (ie Activision, EA, etc) and making the games that we want to play, not just want focus groups think will sell.

Just wondering what you all think of this whole kickstarter thing.

Thanks for reading...

It's a great initiative for sure.
I myself haven't help fund anything from kickstarter but have done similar with natural selection 2 where you can pre purchase the game and get access to all the betas they run and trial the different builds.
It's a great way to make the process of them making games for us more personal.

I have funded Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns, and Faster Than Light.
I've backed Double Fine Adventure, Guncraft, Shadowrun Returns and Police Warfare. Loving the Kickstarter Initiative, a big up yours to the publishers.

I wish GSC would make a Kickstarter for STALKER 2 already.
Totally agree, they'd have it funded in less than 24 hours!

Here's another Kickstarter I stumbled upon today. I really like the art style - pc.mmgn.com/...
Activision, EA are greedy and with all their resources they don't even get the job done properly. I'm still waiting to find a game I'm keen on supporting in this program, just waiting for something to grab my attention.

It seems that greed is what's driving this. Seems a big "stuff you" to major publishers.
I wouldn't say it's greed. I think it's just boring old cost-benefit. For traditional models of distribution, publishing a game costs a lot of money, so any game that a publisher distributes needs to be a financial success. It's no wonder they're not particularly jiving on old and alien genres like top-down tactical RPGs and point-and-clicks and roguelikes. Kickstarter merely removes this consideration by a) getting rid of the middleman, and b) removing the financial risk, since the development and digital distribution of the game is already paid for.

It's working great for games that are in niche genres and being developed by people who are either famous or who have worked on famous games, but there are lots and lots of Kickstarters failing out there, and they are the ones that are made by nobodies and which are, for example, iOS physics games or something else that's pedestrian and common.
It depends though; I've seen a number of non-famous projects being funded because they already had something tangible to bring to the table.

Lost Planet is one I personally funded because they already had an in-game trailer, with the idea firmly planted in our minds of what the game was all about. It was exciting, much more exciting than two people talking for 5 minutes with nothing more than concept art and ideas. That project was funded, a beta was delivered a little while ago, and it is amazing!

I can't find that game. Can you link me so I can watch?
I meant to call it Lifeless Planet, that's why you can't find it haha

Here's an interesting one. Sandbox zombie apocalypse FPS in a randomly generated world, with "at least" 16 player co-op. www.kickstarter.com/... Min. pledge $25 for the game.
That seems very cool. If I had $25 to my name right now I'd definitely back it!
You don't need $25 now, you need it thirteen days from now!

You also said you funded Police Warfare because you liked SWAT, Heller, but you may have missed a more appropriate game: www.kickstarter.com/...

Ooooooh, I'm totally pledging for that one, once I get my paycheck.

Pledge now, the money gets taken at the deadline of funding.
Damn @Desi I missed out on that one. Well never mind, if it's good I'll pick it up upon release.

I could, I forgot I had 100 in my paypal. but I need 100 for my Tera subscription :S

So waiting on paycheck cause there's less than 200 in my bank account.

Edit; Oh wait I get what you mean.
Well I believe Shadowrun Returns should hit Melbourne up as its second city - pc.mmgn.com/...

Almost forgot to pledge for The Dead Linger :P
;O

They released some in-engine prototype footage recently. It's really elementary, but shows a day-night cycle with actual dark nights. The in-game cycle is one hour of day time and one hour of night.
Seeing as Police Warfare was cancelled I'm going to back the zombie game @Desi suggested!

Also for those who want to jump into the Shadowrun Returns Kickstarter, funding closes in 3 days.

Finally, the Leisure Suit Larry HD Kickstarter has just reached its goal - bit.ly/...
The thing about funding Kickstarters is that the results won't be available for anywhere from six months to two years. So in a year's time we'll all have forgotten about everything we backed, and when we get emails saying that the games are ready it will be like Surprise Christmas.
Christmas is sure to come early! So many great projects, I just don't have the money to back them all :P
