There is two different damage types;
Attack damage (auto attacks)
Ability power (ability damage)
Pretty self-explanatory tbh

basically yes.
but some champions scale there attacks on either attack damage or ability power.
you can tell from when you hover over the ability the "(+###)" bracketed +number will either be in red (for AD) or teal (for AP).
eg:
