Steam Fail

12234 Views 415 Posts PC Gaming
This has been driving me nuts for hours now, I've been on Google looking for answers but everything has failed.
When I try to start Steam it hangs for a few minutes and eventually gives me the connection error.
Note: Steam wouldn't load prior to me pulling my computer apart hence why I decided to do my upgrades last night.

List of things I've tried.
 • 8 billion reboots
 • Delete client registry blob
 • Delete Beta keys
 • I'm not capped my ADSL2 connection is running at normal speed
 • Defraged my Steam hard drive
 • Dropped Windows firewall
 • Had a rant on Facebook
 • Excessive swearing

Weird thing is I can sign in via my laptop, this is not the first time this has happened and it has got me puzzled.
You could try backing up your games, un-installing steam then re-installing steam

There's around 400gb of games
It's an option but I think I'll leave that until last.
I've downloaded about 12 steam updates in the past 3 days

Same here! They must be fixing quite a few bugs.
My brother was saying its for issues with non steam games and the overlay.

mkkk, crazy idea here. No idea if it will work, comes with no waranty

change the name of the steam folder containing game files by 1 letter, maybe even move it out of the program files directory (but not copy, just move/cut)

re-install

Delete the empty folder which is supposed to contain games and move/rename your old one to the propper directory
My steam done this a few weeks ago, the only way I could fix it was to completly delete steam and reinstall, the first time ever the clientregistry.blob trick hasn't worked. You should be able to just copy your steam games folder to your desktop then delete/reinstall steam then move the games back, steam will see them when it starts up and add any registry entries it may need to run them

Seems like it huh? I've had around 3 today.
A friend of mine had this issue at a lan about 3 weeks ago.

Tried everything you mentioned too.

Ended up doing a whole clean install of steam I believe and then moving the steamapps folder into that.

Looks the clean install is my last option then, I've just backed up my steam folder (took ages). I'll uninstall it later tonight and start again.
Appreciate the responses
dont do a clean install yet.
there is a cache folder that you can delete and steam will automatically redownload it for you.
google that first?

That's the client registry (:

If you delete that it redownloads the steam platform for you.
could be what it needs.
people are suggesting an uninstall of steam, but that just gets rid of everything rather than just the client.

Try disconnecting your internet, then logging on in Offline mode.
Full reinstall did the trick.

If only every fix was that simple

Did you end up backing up every game?

Yeah it took a few hours to do so
Ughh painfull... Then you need to reinstall them all... that's alot of disc swapping... Unless you did it to another folder or external... but still... alot of clicking..
Not that much clicking. Its simple. You go to the steam/steamapps and copy the 'common' folder. Copy to external or somewhere on the computer on the same drive would help. Then when you reinstall steam, start the downloads of the games you have backed up, just let them all start for 10 seconds, then quit steam. Copy back in the 'common' folder and overwrite the folders that steam just made in preparation for downloading. When you boot up steam, it will verify the game files and presto. I you Steam
Well everything was working fine up until the new UI decided to force its self upon me now I'm back in the same boat. I've spent the majority of the night reading heaps of crap about Steam on Google and I can't find anything.
Patients has run out, I've had enough and I'm out of ideas.
Ergh, damn steam, hopefully you won't have to end up doing another reinstalation. Maybe try looking for original steam clent downloads, though you've probably tried it.
press f10.
Never gets old
I've sent an email to Steam but I'm not holding my breath.
