Windows 8

Still a long way to go before we see this, set for a early 2013 retail release. So the list of rumours and speculation will keep flooding in for a long time to come windows8beta.com/...

For the first time in ages the task manager has been changed www.tweaktown.com/...

If you find any info or updates please share them in this thread.
I'm using the consumer preview as an every day operating system (on a secondary computer which I do use pretty frequently). I haven't used Windows for a while and I only got this because the other option I had was Vista (and my experiences here haven't been good, though it could have been the computer, as Skarteh said). The compatibility is good, though I had to use a third party sort of graphics driver and I can't get a driver for the sound. Other than that, everything application I've tried has worked, though I haven't tried too wide a variety of things. Metro would be great for a computer with a touch screen (I suppose it's designed for this) but it does get pretty annoying when gaming (especially full screen, as Xivion said).

All that being said, I'd probably choose to use Windows 7 if I could, mainly because this just seems to be (at least for the moment) Windows 7 + features I can't use + compatibility issues. But I suppose the latter is to be expected, since it's not the official release.

I hear this over and over again. I'd really like to see what their marketing plan is to convince people that their touch phone needs to be bigger and less mobile.

I keep imagining Windows 8 being used on some sort of computer/coffee table. That is literally the only situation I can imagine it being used, other than on a tablet.
www.engadget.com/... Family safety features for Windows 8. This is where all the filtering should be done not at the ISP end like what the morons in government want to do.
Got this running on a VM at work. It's windows 7 with a horrible new menu thing (aimed at touch screens). I'll stick with 7 thanks.

Very interesting. Sad actually, because it sounds like Windows 7 vs Vista, incredibly similar but with a few toys and stability from maturity. If out really does offer next to no features (useful), over 7, I won't be updating unless there is no performance hit. I've heard it will be more multicore and APU friendly though so that alone might do it for me. My next system wil probably have 6 cores 12 threads so out would be nice to utilise that grunt.
Any decent large 120hz touch screen monitors coming out in the future?
That might make upgrading to w8 worth it [Shifty]

It'll cost you. Lots.
Thanks...

You would use a touch monitor? I definitely wouldn't. Not going to smudge up my screen just to use touch when I have a mouse/keyboard to use :/

I only really like it on phones because it means more screen, but that is irrelevant on a computer.

no, touch screen for the metro ui on windows. its apparently fairly average for using a mouse on as its all swipe this and drag that.
About the only place other than on a phone i can actually imagine/see this OS kicking ass is with kinect on a TV.
Is it worth getting windows 8 or keeping windows 7?
Keep 7 until 8 is officially released and all the bugs have gone because atthe moment it is very buggy

Go with what Chucky said unless you want to put it on another partition and just have a mess around with it. I grabbed 7 when it was RC just to get in there early and have a look around.

I couldn't revert back to Windows 7 fast enough.

It's not awful, I liked it for about a week or so, but it was just too clunky for a laptop. The whole metro thing was nice, but all in all, a gimmick. The only useful feature I found was the ability to snap things to the sides. Got it on a separate partition of 50GB, never boot in it, Windows 7 is just far simpler.
I don't like the sound of everything only running in fullscreen.
It seems that Microsoft is following the Pattern:

Windows 95 was good
Windows ME sucked
Windows XP was good
Windows Vista sucked
Windows 7 is good
Windows 8...
W8 is gonna suck then :P
LET'S NOT JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS, GUISE
Yeah :D

Thanks for the help.

but that's what the Internet is for [Derp]
Time to learn how to use Windows 7 for me now! [MOG] been using Vista for many many years (*)
Well there isn't much to learn then. It's pretty much the same but runs a lot better
Hot corners are an incredibly stupid way to hide your main features...
