Discuss Linux in here! Everything from flavours to updates and general help. We'll keep it all in one thread as best we can.

Starting off: I am using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Hardy Heron, but am thinking of upgrading to 8.10 Intrepid Ibex. Although I really like the look of Linux Mint 6 Felicia (quite similar to Ubuntu).

Anybody got any thoughts? My PC isn't that good so I may be better off using Xubuntu 8.10 for something a bit lighter.

There were parts of Fedora (red hat core) that I liked. Generally RPM package support, but on Debian based systems like Ubuntu, the deb packages with Synaptic and Apt have made life for installing things just that much easier.

Let's not forget the Ubuntu Community pwns the customer service of all other GNU-Linux distros, apart from Debian itself.

Yeah, Ubuntu has it down-pat I reckon. Fedora won't even support Java anymore, because it's not open sourced. But it is free, so its pretty damn close

I'm gonna make this thread bold I think, we have had a fair amount of hits

Ubuntu just seems to rock! I have tried other distros (not many) but I just can't fault Ubuntu. It's so easy and awesome

Ubuntu's orange is kinda ugly after looking at it for more than five minutes. I change it all to blue.

And if I'm feeling adventurist I get into the whole 3d desktop fancy **** thing.

boo-yah, I love my cube. Also, I don't mind the browny orange. You know where you can select how many desktops you want, you can select columns and "rows". What do the bloody rows do? Apart from confuse me.

Hey guy I have about 5 partitions on 2 seperate HDD's. At the moment I have windows 7 and XP installed on one HDD and the other is empty. When I boot up it gives me the option with windows boots manager, but If I were to install Ubuntu on the other drive, how would I choose which to boot from?

You would be presented with a menu, asking which OS you would like to boot up into

Just attempted to install but kept getting disk read errors. I may need re burn the disk

Cause ubuntu is awesome! Seriously if you don't want to install it, at least have the live CD handy. It is such a useful tool.

Hey guys, just installed Ubuntu, the max resolution its letting me choose is 800x600, how can I increase the res. The screen looks horrible.

EDIT: OK I managed to get 1280x900 (i think) if i set it to generic 1400x900 (my screen res) but it won't let me go any higher. All other models I choose have 1400x9** but not 900

If you look on the back of your monitor, it should have it's native resolution on there somewhere. Which Ubuntu version is it?

I'm not sure about native res but I know that on windows I usually choose 1400x900, How do I find my Ubuntu version? From memory its 8.xx
