Starting off: I am using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Hardy Heron, but am thinking of upgrading to 8.10 Intrepid Ibex. Although I really like the look of Linux Mint 6 Felicia (quite similar to Ubuntu).

Anybody got any thoughts? My PC isn't that good so I may be better off using Xubuntu 8.10 for something a bit lighter.

is there a linux that can run windows games?
without using WINE etc.

cause i love linux but i love gaming and i hate dual boot systems....

Linux in general is alot more stable and secure than Windows. Just keep in mind that it's not for everyone. If you have given Ubuntu a fair crack then you are OK with me.

Keep in mind that Linux/Unix skills could save your ass one day. myfrag.com.au/

Don't give up just yet. Are you using an Nvidia GPU? If so, in a terminal:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-settings

When that has installed, type

sudo nvidia-settings

and have a play around with those. When you are happy with those settings, click "save to X configuration file"

Not straight out of the box, but they are working on it. If Wine runs things too slow for you, give POL a try. playonlinux.com

ubuntu is free and u can play windows games

wat more it doesnt need much high tech stuff to run it and its awesome

it can play windows games now? what is the emulation program required to do this? or is it inbuilt?

i am having a problem with my live cd = it doesnt run. I tried to install it instead but it froze. I dont think it likes me. (this is with ubuntu)
When i get home i will try it again and if i have another problem i will let you know what it says and you can help me (or any other linux-head for that matter)

Try re-burning yourself one, and do a checksum on the .iso file.

How much ram do you have? You need at least 356mb or something for the live cd.

Do what lewace said and reburn the cd.

Soon, in a couple of weeks I may do a guide on how to boot Linux from an SD card. There are heaps of how-tos out there already though

Hmm, that is usually the output of Ubuntu when you are shutting it down
