A game just came out of the 7 Day FPS Challenge called Receiver. It's something like an FPS Roguelike (randomly assembled world, permadeath, random items and enemies), with the main draw — aside from being an FPS Roguelike — of trying to model the mechanical workings of a gun.

Included in this screenshot is the full in-game help detailing all the stuff you can do with your gun (view it full-size). Certain entries are highlighted in white to let you know what actions you can perform with the gun in its current state.



I like how the gameplay entirely changes when you have to deal with actually operating a firearm. You end up doing a fair amount of double-checking and preparation: you spawn in, check your chamber, and chamber a round if it's empty. You check your magazine so that you know what kind of shape you're in. You make sure the safety is off and the hammer is cocked. After an engagement (which is short, fast and brutal) you fill your magazines with more cartridges. You always try to do a +1 load.

The damage model is pretty good. Enemies kill you with one shot every time, and you can do the same to them if you aim well enough. Enemies have several different systems that can be disabled: a shot to the camera will stop an enemy from tracking you, shooting a turret's gun will make it unable to fire, shooting the rotor shaft of a hover bot will make it unable to fly (but don't get near it, since it's still able to shock!).

Sounds very detailed, not sure if the regular COD run and gun players could handle that.

Hmm, if I can get into a game like Binding of Isaac so severely I don't see why I shouldn't at least give this a shot.
