Saving your download files

437 Views 15 Posts PC Software
Drivers, software, skins, apps etc we all download them, they find their way to a designated download folder and eventually they start to take up a decent amount of space. At times it can come in handy hanging onto these files but like all things in the computer world eventually they become obsolete with a newer version replacing eventually. So that begs the question is there any point in keeping these files?

Do you keep them all, hang onto select files or just bin the lot once you are done?

Right now I'm in a bit of a "clean" mode so I've been deleting most of the dowloaded files once I'm done. Really the only thing I might hang onto are desktop Windows gadgets and customizing options for rocketdock simply because after a while I'll forget what they are called.
Bin once done.. Or say if it's a movie I'll download it into my download file then once I have converted it for my iPad I'll move it to my movies folder.. Bin anything I don't use no more..I try to keep my windows and Lion clean ^_^

I bin everything once it has seen its use. CCleaner every 2-3 days as well.
If an application isn't regularly updated (or I don't feel the need to update it regularly) I copy it to an external hard drive. It helps when formatting to be able to just look at my saved installers and say yup, here's 7Zip, here's Autohotkey, here's Calibre, here's EditPadPro, and so on.
I delete them, cos they make it hard to find your downloaded file.
i was just going on a deleting frenzy, of files hardly used programs and even downloaded programs and games off steam and whatnot, i was running dangerously low on HDD space.. hopefully this wednesday ill be able to head down to my local PC store to pick up a HDD.

Ninite is king.

Just run the application every once in a while.
Oooh that's a very nice program. Adding it to my saved installers.

That looks very handy, can you select what you don't want updated though?

Uh I'm not really sure, truth be told.

I have a few drives just for certain things. If say I buy something later then it ends up being binned but usually I save.
I leave everything in a single folder then forget I have it anyway so I generally have a few copies of the main stuff.
I keep everything else in good order so my downloads folder is like my bedroom. Messy as!

Not to confuse my downloads folder with my torrents/Usenet folder.
I try to keep my download folder clean but I'm pretty lazy... I usually end up purging it every time I notice it's larger than 10GB.
i delete or move them, i only keep some things in there if ive no other place i want to store them.
My downloads folder is usually empty, but right now I have a file downloading and there's an image I haven't moved yet.
