Since we have already gone though 100 pages with the first general car discussion thread and we are on the way to doing that again I thought we could have another thread just about car mods.

My last car I went nuts and pretty much swapped everything in that car, but my new car I've only had for a year and it's still under the extended warranty. The good thing is this time I got car that's actually quick from the factory rather than spend time making a standard car go fast. Still want to mess around with it once the warranty is up, a few smart modifications will get it moving along very nicely.
Right now it only has a K&N replacement filter, cat back Remus exhaust. On the visual side of things I painted the stock 19" wheels gloss black, the previous owner left a few nasty gutter marks on them so I hat to clean them up anyway. I have an over the top cold air intake sitting here ready to be fitted but it looks like it will be stuff around trying to keep the air flow meter in there. I'm thinking about selling it and getting a different kind of CAI, maybe a pod filter in a box, I've seen a few decent ones around.

I'll probably be crapping on about this stereo install for a while so I'll move that discussion over here where it belongs.
I just got back from Autobarn in Dandenong and they were a great help, when it comes to technical knowledge they blow JB out of the water by miles.
Glad I brought in my head unit so we could check the plugs to be 100 percent sure we got the right stuff. I grabbed wiring harness to suit my car and head unit so once the old system is out it will just be just all plugs, no cutting at all. The guy I was talking to had a VZ as well so he told me that the Aeropro wiring harness has the constant power and the power on wires the wrong way around so he switched them around for me in case I forgot. Also grabbed an antenna adapter because the connection was different to the one on the head unit. So that's it I have everything I need to get the system in and fired up.
I asked about the steering control kit and they had it in stock and it was a hell of a lot cheaper that the one I found on eBay. It was just over 80 bucks, and another 30ish bucks for another plug that goes from that steering control harness to the head unit (apparently they are all different). So for around 115 bucks i could get the steering controls hooked up.I didn't grab those parts yet I might hook them up later, but it's good to know I can get the parts needed locally.
After Googling around I found out how to get the head unit out cleanly, I knew you needed the removal pins but I wasn't sure how to make them perfectly. The common mistake people make is that they don't put some notches at the end of the pins so all that happens is the pins slide out but not the head unit.

you need around 3mm or 1/8 inch diameter rods to make them. dont use anything less cos otherwise it will be too hard and wont get in there properly. the notches are the main thing too. just file them into the ends and it will work

Going to my mates panel shop after work today, he said he's got what's needed to get the thing out. Since I have the proper wiring harness I'm going to tackle this one myself. Got tomorrow off so I can take my time with it then.

glad you arent paying anyone to do this. its so easy and quick to get the thing out in the vz no screws to lose or trim to damage.

At first I thought it was a little daunting but after reading a few guides and threads about it (the guys at justcommodores are pretty helpful) all doesn't seem that hard. Being a new car for me I was worries I'd snap a clip on the trip or something stupid like that :P

Thats not daunting!
Changing the headunit on my Laser was a bitch! I had no wiring diagram, I eventually figured it out hit and miss. Once I identified the power wires and had the thing on I figured out the speaker wirings by touching them to the wires on the headunit and seeing what worked weeding out speaker locations and then wiring up properly.

Took me a while but I finally got that head unit in, I got stuck when it came time to remove the factory head unit cage, luckily my mate came around and helped me out. Smart arse got it out in a couple of seconds [Shifty]
Had to rip some of the center console apart to get it all installed but I managed not to stuff any clips in the process. I'll take some pics in the day time if you are interested in seeing the final product.

That's not a car that can be modified, it's not "impossible" there's just no point in doing so. It's not the best platform to work with, not many people do work on them so there's not a great deal of aftermarket support for that car.
Maybe just chuck a stereo in there if you want some entertainment.

@guyver i know. it has a radio with 8 track player. I know there really is no point because someone hit it and has ruined a whole side of it.

yeah. the type of model had been used for a couple of years.
