Quote Me a Build/Update Thread V.2

The old thread has reached 80 pages, and has been filled with many builds that the very helpful members of MyFrag have all contributed too.
IMPORTANT
However a problem with people changing the limit on prices, asking people to put together build estimates without knowing the costs, and people generally not knowing what they are talking about has occurred. It is acknowledged that build prices do change due to everyday life, however the number of people that have been changing the price (from 3000 in some cases to 1000...) is getting out of hand. Therefore i have created this form:
P's dont support dual 16x PCI-E... only dual 8X PCI-E... X's do...
yes
Thats why IMO X58 own P55

@nicnamenic I assume your friend isn't doing ANY gaming otherwise that new build is terrible 4870 down to 4670 is a huge step and he can't expect to play anything very well with that, stick with the original build if you ask me!
X48 own P55. X58 own all

nah P55 own X48 cause CPU pwns
X58 IS DOMINATE !!
i have one ! yay lols
But you cant use the new i7s in X58, is that bad? Would the old ones be just as good?

Also, like I asked before, should I wait for the PCI 3.0 boards?

X48 pwns P55 because of the crossfire/sli drawback, and the I5 is the same as any ordinary Quad core... just a new sticker...

And imo, for now go the origional I7's... the 920 pwns the 870, especially for the price... and the chipset
[edit] sorry bout double post comp is being a bit**
I dunno, looks to me like the 860 is better than the 920.

the cpu it self barely is better
920 is overall better imo cause chip set and what not

well... by 300mhz... a mild OC.

But you get the X58 with the 1366...
[edit] sniped

And... that quad sli evga mobo just came out for it
So even though the 860 is mildly better, the 920 wins because the X58 chipset is better?

And what was all that about the SLI draw back? Can't you use anyhthing over 2 cards or something?

P55 cannot SLI and Xfire
X58 can
x16 FTW?
You can. but the PCI-E is 16X speed...

P chipset: 1x PCI-E card at 16X speed, or 2x PCI-E cards at 8X speed each.
X chipset: 1x PCI-E card at 16x speed, or 2x PCI-E cards at 16X speed each.

it can just not as well.
Guys, I need help with deciding what case and PSU I can get for this build:

CPU: AMD x4 Phenom II 810 $209
Motherboard: Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P $149
RAM: Kingston 4GB DDR2-1066 $88
HDD: Seagate 1TB $105
GPU: 1GB 4870 HIS $201
Case: ?
PSU: ?
Optical Drive: Asus SATA DVD-RW $65
Monitor: 21.5" Benq E2200HD 2ms $215
Speakers: Logitech X530 5.1 $69
K/B: Logitech USB G15 $98
Mouse: Logitech USB G5 $67
Labour: $70

I can spend a maximum of around $255 for both of these.
and a PSU strong enough for a dual GPU setup?

Well, see, I don't know if I'll need another GPU in the future. I do wanna be able to run most brand new games on maxed out settings.

Would it be better to go 2x 4870 or a single 4890? (sorry if this is a noob question) And do you have MSN by any chance?
It would be better getting 2x 4870's

4890 isn't much of a performance gain from a 4870.

I can't think right now about the case and psu. Way too tired.

I'll pm u my msn. Talk tomorrow.

until then i hope someone gives you some ideas.
I think just Triple Channel alone would put the 920 ahead of the 860 but if you just consider clock speed it really means jack all because the 920 hits 4ghz on air and all you need is a $100 cooler.

It remains to be seen how good the i5's are, I've no doubt they will be pretty good being newer but I think the 1366 will stay ahead when you consider the overclocking headroom. Unless of course the 1156 overclocks even BETTER we will see soon enough!
Hi everyone. My CPU is a single-core 2.4Ghz AMD, and I am running a 1Gb 8800GT in the same rig; it's really kind of silly the kind of bottlenecking I get, so it's time to update. I'm not after insane top-of-the-line stuff, so here's what I've got so far:

- Core 2 Duo E8400 (3Ghz)
- 2GB DDR3-1333 RAM
- Seagate 500GB SATA HDD
- 1GB 8800GT (overclocked, from my current computer)

How is it looking? Would it be sensible to upgrade any of these parts? For the record, I think quad core is unnecessary until games start making proper use of it, and I'm perfectly happy with even a smaller harddrive. The rig will be running plain 32 bit Windows XP.

How much would this cost? How much extra money shall I allow for a case and motherboard?
Just for a bit of future proofing I would go with the Q8400 instead, same price and all. If you can stretch it to $270 you can get one of the new i5's which would be a really smart move as it will set you up for much longer term.

What were you thinking in terms of M/B? For a 775 the P5K/P5Q is a good option but it depends if you plan to go SLi down the line as both are Crossfire m/b's. The good thing with those is, if you update your GPU later you can get a 4870 because they are insane bang for buck at the moment

Quoting your parts at MSY
E8400/Q8400 both $216 ($269 for i5)
2GB G.Skill 1333mhz is $52 but do you not want DDR2?
Seagate 500gb is $64

Allow about $150 for a good 775 m/b and $200 if you go i5. A good case can be had for $130 if you look at a Coolermaster CM690 or even less if you aren't after a huge amount of space. Gladiator 600 is $135 WITH a PSU. For budget cases I would definitely recommend Coolermaster they do very good cheap cases.
Hmm I think I will stick with DDR2 after all.

What is the magic of selecting a case? Are they all pretty standard so they'll take any kind of motherboard? Is there like a compatibility list or something if they don't? I already have a Cooler Master Centurion RC-532-SKR2, which I wouldn't mind reusing.

just make sure the case and the motherboard have the same form factor, the majority of them are ATX, but you can get micro-ATX (uATX) and E-ATX as well
Its pretty obvious when they WON'T fit standard ATX. They're generally bloody small. Mid towers will pretty much always fit them
My friend is looking to upgrade his GPU. he has PCI-E atm, with a 7600gs.

His budget is $100. whats the best bang for his buck?
