Quote Me a Build/Update Thread V.2

The old thread has reached 80 pages, and has been filled with many builds that the very helpful members of MyFrag have all contributed too.
IMPORTANT
However a problem with people changing the limit on prices, asking people to put together build estimates without knowing the costs, and people generally not knowing what they are talking about has occurred. It is acknowledged that build prices do change due to everyday life, however the number of people that have been changing the price (from 3000 in some cases to 1000...) is getting out of hand. Therefore i have created this form:
I did a lot more reading and spec matching and manual-digging and came up with the final list of parts.

Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16Ghz
ASUS P5KPL-AM/PS mobo or ASUS P5KPL-EPU mobo if ordered from MSY
4GB Kingston DDR2 800mhz RAM
Seagate 500GB SATA HDD

The mobo is a mATX which will fit in my existing case, and has nice built-in sound. Guess I'll get everything from MSY and do it myself ($82 cheaper than the closest retail shop). It's kind of daunting, but it will be interesting to build a computer.
A 9600GT, but if you can stretch it to a 4850.
if he go's 4850 he may aswell go 4870...
Hmm going point

9600GT - $30 - 4850 - $30 - 4870

So probably just get the 9600GT
Ok thanks, i will pass this information on to him

Thank you Kenny

Bought one of those mobos today for a mates computer and I don't really like it... it's just really, really low-end. I'm building it tomorrow morning so I'll let you know how it goes.

Looks like it covers the basics though so if that's all he's after then it's not worth forking out for a more expensive board. The only thing it's missing is PCIe2.0 which most of the newer cards support these days.
What do you guys think about this build? ROOK1E quoted it, I changed a few things:

CPU: AMD x4 Phenom II 810 $209
Motherboard: Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P $149
RAM: Kingston 4GB DDR2-1066 $88
HDD: Seagate 1TB $105
GPU: 1GB 4870 HIS $201
Case: Thermaltake V9 $112
PSU: Antec TP 750W $174
Optical Drive: Asus SATA DVD-RW $65
Monitor: 21.5" Benq E2200HD 2ms $215
Speakers: Logitech X530 5.1 $69
K/B: Logitech USB G15 $98
Mouse: Logitech USB G5 $67
MSY Labour: $70

Price: $1622

That build makes my pants a little smaller.

Nuff sedz.

I think the G5 is **** though. Depends if you like Mouse 4/5 being accessible. If you do, don't buy it, get a Microsoft Sidewinder X5. If you don't care, get a G3.

I care.

mouse 4/5? those 2 thumb buttons on the side? theyre accessible, for me anyway.

Mouse 4/5 are very accessible on a G3, no matter what grip you use. For me, thumb goes on top of Button 4 and ring finger lies flat along Button 5, so if I want to hit it, I just squeeze the mouse a little.

I decided not to go with PCIe 2.0 because, apparently, not even two 8800s in SLI can utilise all of the 16x bandwidth provided by PCIe 1.0. People in Tom's Hardware are even saying that no cards come close to maxing PCIe 1.0's limit presently.

yeah if it's fine with you. I will most likely only say something if you change the main parts of the build. ie. cpu, ram, mobo, psu. case i dont mind as it's a personal choice ;]

I was aiming to say G5 there. I don't even know what a G3 looks like

Yeah thats more like it, accessible buttons! My thumb is on Mouse4/5 at all times ;D
hey guys how are ya? im a regular myps3er but never been on myfrag before, hence the low kudos lol
im thinking early next year of buying a desktop pc:
Build Budget: cheap, but pretty functional. i hope to spend around $450-500 and understand this wont get me many bells and whistles, but i want a computer that runs quickly and is of quite good quality. also, id need to install a pci card to recieve wifi, and would like to install a tv card (HD if i can find a cheap enough card). the tv card is not vital to get straight away
Desired Builder: since im new around here i cant really request a builder.
Location: in adelaide, just north of the city
Ability to build PC: i would consider myself capable of building it, if given sufficient instruction/someone with patience, but ive never done it before
Screen Resolution: my screen resolution i dont think is full hd, but above sd. sorry i dont know the specifics
Desired Purpose: im not an avid computer gamer by any means. i use ps3 linux atm and really enjoying mucking around with that just finding new things to do. i intend to do something similar if i get a desktop pc - use it for a variety of purposes. id like a tv card and to run something similar to mythtv to use it as a PVR.
Parts being kept: N/A
*note: i have a spare 250gb 2.5" hdd, could i use that in any way?
* i dont need a monitor either
* im confident i could cope without buying a copy of windows, my gf has about 4 copie
my gf has about 4 copies lol
so what do you think? anybody here that give give me any sort of inital price plan?
thanks heaps guys, much appreciated
Ok, well I just built a mate a computer this morning using an Intel Core2Duo E5300 and it does the job just fine.

Given $500 I would go with:
Intel Core2Duo E6300
ASUS P5QL-SE
Kingston 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2-800
Seagate 500GB SATA
Sony DVDRW SATA
Coolermaster RC-334 w/420W PSU

TOTAL: $480

You'd have to use onboard graphics but as long as you dont intend on gaming you'll be ok.
It's near impossible to fit a TV card into that budget.
All prices from MSY, there should be one near you.
(CBD, Plympton, Holden Hill, Elizabeth)
If you dont want to build it yourself, they will but they charge $70.

That should do everything you want and there is plenty of room for expansion if you want to throw some more money at it.

so that would get me everything i need?
also is there anyway i could perhaps utilise the 250gb laptop drive i have spare?
and how much would a tv card set me back (and also wireless card?)
sorry for all the questions, i had a look myself on msy but dont know enough about the setup of a pc to know what parts are crucial, nor much about which products are good bang for their buck. much appreciated
geeeeeeeeeez. do some research about htpc's mate... (nicnamenic)

linux friendly build for ya mate. ;]
EDIT TAKEN OUT
MAKING BETTER ONE FOR YA

throw in a dlink pcie wireless card for around 30-50 and you've got a wicked htpc. ;]

brb
I made one for $607 with a TV tuner.
Coolermaster Elite 360
AMD Phenom II c2 545
XFX Geforce 9600GT 512mb Low Power edition
Kingston 4gb 667Mhz ram
Gigabyte GA-M85M-US2H mATX mobo
LG optical drive
Leadtek WINFAST DTV 100 D PCI tv Tuner
PLUS SHIPPING IF BOUGHT FROM PCCASEGEAR!!
All from PCCASEGEAR
My 2 cents

Umm...
The laptop drive would work but would be a lot slower than a 3.5" drive.
Network cards = I'm not too sure whats good and what's not but they all seem to be around the $20 mark.
TV cards are between $50 for a standard analogue one to $200 for a fancy HD digital one. The Leadtek DVR3200H look alright at $93 with both analogue and digital.

EDIT: Just listen to ROOK1E, he's the smart one.

for the laptop drive, i suggest just using it for storage or backup,
Network cards are around 40 dollars for a half decent one, which is what i payed for mine. If you want bang for buck AMD/ATI.

thanks for your input mate is there like a website where you can actually just pick out parts from a list and add it to a virtual setup? or are you just adding up parts from a pc shop?

*facepalm* as i said, do some bloody research.

www.pccasegear.com/

that one is a friendly tv tuner and is basically all you need.
however, it's not linux friendly. tom, you said you would like something close to mythtv? look up media portal. very simmilar program.

skids, i cbf. could you change your cpu to a 240, change the 9600 to a 9400 xfx and stick in a pci wireless card. with say a 500gb hdd. prices from msy
