Quote Me a Build/Update Thread V.2

Featured 62880 Views 2433 Posts Social
The old thread has reached 80 pages, and has been filled with many builds that the very helpful members of MyFrag have all contributed too.
IMPORTANT
However a problem with people changing the limit on prices, asking people to put together build estimates without knowing the costs, and people generally not knowing what they are talking about has occurred. It is acknowledged that build prices do change due to everyday life, however the number of people that have been changing the price (from 3000 in some cases to 1000...) is getting out of hand. Therefore i have created this form:
for your needs, good value :)

Maybe someone else will give some input though. I don't know that much about cases or mobos so maybe someone will recommend some changes. =/
Sweet, thanks for that man.

Also, changed the case to this, since it's cheaper: www.umart.com.au/...
Also, would that graphics card be suitable to view on a 40" TV, my current card is rubbish and can't read anything, like 10 year old computer.

Its almost exactly the same as the one I recommended in the previous page of this thread.

The CPU has a GPU on it, if you don't plan to game it'll do fine. No need for the GTX430 if you don't game. 40" TV is no more load than a 21" monitor, same amount of pixels so same load.

Different PSU. Get a Silverstone. And the screen, seems a waste to buy lees than a 24" now considering the prices.

Less actually if you have a 1920x1200 monitor =)

gawd I luv 16x10 monitors, I hate how they're almost all 16x9 now because they can use the same panels as TVs
Made up a budget gamer for a friend today:
No chance to bump that up to a 6870 or a second hand 5870?

That is a 450w PSU right? maybe not the 5870 then :P
Their budget was $500, I got it as close as I could without skimping too hard. Graphics is the easiest thing to upgrade anyway (besides RAM, but 4GB is skimping it).

Try and get a HD6790 at least, that pulls a fair bit ahead of the HD6770. Also you don't really need 8GB of RAM on that rig, you could get a decent 4GB kit and save some money.
Guys i want to look at getting a build with 2011 sockets. anyone come up with a good build for about $1400?
Is that with peripherals (mouse, keyboard, monitor and whatnot) or without?

If without, you could probably just modify the one Schnapman posted earlier on this page a little to suit your needs. Like, that GPU may not be so necessary for you depending on what you want to play.
it is without peripherals. i have done a build myself, not taking into account aesthetics or whether or not the parts fit together and this is what i have. (sorry i don't know how to insert image)

ASRock X79 Extreme 7 Motherboard $325
Intel Core i7 3820 $305
Cosair Vengeance CMZ12GX3M3A 1600C9 12GB (3x4GB) DDR3 $99
Corsair AX750 Gold Power Supply $215
Western Digital Green 2TB WD20EARX $125
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 580 Super Overclock $479
CoolerMaster HAF X Case $199

Total $1749

I don't know if that is a good build or not. Is it good for the money, is the power supply big enough, is the graphics card good?

I want to be able to max out settings on new games, and eventually output to a receiver, will i need a sound card for that? I have no idea how to overclock. I'll look at getting it all at the end of May/ June and it will be my first PC build, but for now I need to brainstorm ideas with people that know.

do i need a full sized case for this setup? what are the benefits besides airflow of a full sized case?
Why 2011 Madrid? If your budget is that low you are not going to get the most out of it. If you are aiming for a gaming PC, that is a waste of money. Socket 1155 will do everything 2011 can in games and you will spend a lot less for a lot more.

If you do want to go 2011 for some other reason, critiques on the build would be:
1. Do not buy an ASRock motherboard, Gigabyte or ASUS would be a better choice.
2. 2011 is Quad Channel, choose a 4 stick memory kit not 3.
3. Consider an AMD 7950 instead of the 580, and avoid the Gigabyte triple fan cards, go for an MSI. 7950 is similar to more powerful than the 580, runs cooler and uses less power.
4. Having a Green drive as your only/primary system drive will ensure your system runs like a dog. Get an SSD as primary or at the very least a 7200RPM drive.

PSU is a good choice, case is good if you like the look of it and the CPU is good bang for buck if you go 2011.

EDIT:
Intel 2500K/ASUS z77-v/Corsair 8GB CMZ/MSI 7950/Crucial 64GB SSD/WD 2TB G/Silverstone 750W/CM Storm Enforcer = $1446 or $1945 if you have dual 7950's.

I should mention the above is immense overkill, dual GTX570's are ample to max everything and will knock off about $600.
great this is the sort of feedback i need.

things i don't understand and hope people have patience is, what is a 3 channel memory kit? why not just put in 1 stick? also a mate told me that a full sized tower is too big and will look stupid.

i'll be home tonight to have a better look at your improvements. i went 2011 only because it is newer. my goal is to have 3 or more screens running so do i need 2 graphics cards for that?
The tower size is all down to preference.
If you are getting an ATX (not mATX or ITX) then you will need either a mid or full tower.
There are so many to choose from, none are exactly the wrong choice, but some are more right than others.

Go 1155, cheaper and it's barely older. Still holds its own incredibly well.

3 screens can be run offa single AMD (eyefinity) and I believe the new nvidia cards support 3 off 1 card.
But if you went with Skarteh's suggestion of 2x 570s then that would handle it well.
In any case, if you want to run games on all 3 screens at once then you will be wanting a minimum of SLi or crossfire.
how do i insert a screen shot?

i would be able to get ivy bridge by the time i can get my PC, is this going to be worth it? same price?

do i need extra cooling stuff?

what about this build? www.youtube.com/...

E~

Also if you're after value and performance then go with a socket 1155 Intel build. AMD's FX CPU's are a little... behind the game, you could say. :S

Still, regardless AMD CPU's are fine, but you would get better performance all round if you stick with Intel's 1155.

Probably the most popular Intel CPU is the i5 2500K, but you should also check out the i5 3570K it was pretty much only just released.
I hear that ivy bridge ate a bit lackluster when compared to its sandy brother.

How so? Its a die shrink :/

thoughts?

i really like this build www.youtube.com/...

so i have the case and really like that green colour scheme. thoughts on all the parts used? and whether it will look good looking in the window?

i like the dual 570s idea, or should i go 7950 i only have 1 GPU in this build and would add another maybe a month later. but will most likely go 7970 now

do i need the cooling?
Don't really need liquid cooling if you're not OC'ing.

And an 850w is a bit overkill for a single 570 [MOG]
Nothing wrong with keeping your chip as cool as possible, but does that case have room for a dual rad?
Consider the h80 or equivalent, would be easier to work with.
ok after more hours on youtube and looking at parts i have learned that ivy bridge can support 3 monitors off the 1 cpu if your motherboard can support it. so in saying that i plan to get a build without a graphics card and run 3 monitors off that, well at least 1 until i get the other 2 but thats another discussion. this will give me time to get a graphics card in another month after build.

i also learn't that on 1155 chipset it will not support more than 4 cores but i don't see this being an issue.

i want to run an SSD as a boot drive, thats what you do right? so just windows on that? i have gone with a 60GB.

i have gone for 2TB to start with and will add when needed.

i don't know about the motherboard being able to run 3 monitors off it or not? the video i saw said it needed to be z77. and 16GB ram is enough but is that the right sort?

i have gone for an i7 because i plan on doing a lot of tasks at once. the 6 audio connections are to do 7.1 sound right? can i plug this up to a receiver when i eventually get one or will i need a separate sound card?

i am happy with the price, $1550, and will add changes as they come up. end of may is when i get paid and will buy 1st week of june. other things to add will be CPU cooling and lights.

the video mentioned is this one: www.youtube.com/...

as for the case, there is another video where all of the above looks like it can fit into it with no problems.
