Tablet Fever

Is it me or has there been an abundance of Tablet related news and information flooding the tech sites? iPad, Tegra 2 tablets, etc etc. I don't see the point to buying one of these touch screen tablets to just read emails, search the web, view media, they're too big to be conveniently used in public and too small to be used at home as primary internet access device.
It might come in handy if you were a sales rep walking around a show room floor and could use a tablet to display your product, but for every day use I can't see this device being worth its money.

So, tablets = pointless techno gimmick or not?
I think the HP Slate will be quite useful, especially considering it has full flash support.
I'm gonna say something i would have shot myself in the leg for a little while ago. But say you wanted to check email on the go, use msn, etc. all the 'basic' web uses. Wouldn't a tablet such as the ipad be BETTER than a laptop. If you think about it, it will take up as much if not a little less room in a bag than a laptop would, and the bootup time is much quicker, meaning you can get what you want to see much faster?

Just one train of thought though....
I reckon they are just another gimmick which is taking place over the recent netbook craze
I think they would be helpful for students, especially if their text books were downloadable off the digital book stores
Netbook's are slow, small and an excuse of laptop.
If you want to access the web, emails etc a phone will do that job well enough and it fits in your pocket.
it's lame.

I want a slide open PSP that has a large screen, can be used as a mobile, play games, browse the web etc.

Something like this.

But it'll need to be the thinner than current psp's and should double as a mobile phone.

I'd buy one of them.

The only problem with that is phone charges (what they charge in NZ is criminal) but devices that use wi-fi can only access wi-fi points which isnt as wide spread as the phone service network

If you go to www.engadget.com/... right now there's 8 iPad articles on the one page. This is just epic overkill, I know that it's new piece of tech and there's people out there interested in it but enough is enough.
Yep its getting annoying

So is anyone here going to get one?

Why are you getting an iPad? Do you just buy everything they make without thinking or is there an actual reason?

I wish i had enough money to buy everything they make without thinking

But really I wanna use it for uni. Mostly for lectures, taking notes, book replacement (if available on ibookstore). Also, internet access when im too lazy to use my laptop

Plus im an apple whore
I know people who have amazon kindles, they are good for reading and thats what they're designed to do, anything else they are so so at. A major part about them I do like is the free 3G internet.

free 3g?

so u get free internet anywhere?
Yes, free internet anywhere.

Amazon did a deal with the telcos in the US to access 3G internet free for downloading books and general HTML web page viewing, java/flash is enabled.
The free HTML internet doesn't automatically work in Australia because that agreement is not there, but the restriction is in the kindle itself, not the 3G, so you set your residence to somewhere in the US and it works just fine, facebook works even.

Nuff said
lol so true

Hey Maxiboy can you point me towards some more information about this?

Doe it have a sim built in or something? I would have thought you'd need a sim to authenticate to an ISP?

cheers.
