Is it me or has there been an abundance of Tablet related news and information flooding the tech sites? iPad, Tegra 2 tablets, etc etc. I don't see the point to buying one of these touch screen tablets to just read emails, search the web, view media, they're too big to be conveniently used in public and too small to be used at home as primary internet access device.
It might come in handy if you were a sales rep walking around a show room floor and could use a tablet to display your product, but for every day use I can't see this device being worth its money.

So, tablets = pointless techno gimmick or not?

I can't say as I don't have one, but if you set your residence to anywhere in the US it works. (I am in Sydney)

Its a sealed unit, I guess it has some SIM-like information inside it, but you don't put one in there.
the Internet is really more of a google function, you can't enter a webpage address, but with google you can just search and go to just about any site, it even saves cookies.

I might check out the Slate when it comes out but I want a PC in that form if you get what I mean.

Not a gaming rig, but somethng that can at least multi-task or support flash and the peripherals I want to use.

How cool would Civ IV be on a tablet though

The iPad will be lost in a sea of these devices in a couple of years time, but they will still be tauted as 'revolutionaries' here by the iFreaks (no offense but... yeah). Just like with the iPod. Because there was nothing like it beforehand *cough*walkman,discman,any portable radio*cough*

Yeah, it's interesting with the interactive adds and stuff, I think some, like the Toy Story 3 one, have little mini games in them.

If anyone's interested, here's the Apple iPhone OS 4 Event, it's about an hour long, but really interesting. Check it out.

like if u had OS 2 before 3.0 came out then u had to pay like $13 to upgrade to os3 but u got online gaming and stuff

but the newer ones come updated

dont forget the tablets that hp did a few years ago they failed as people didnt think they would ever be needed.

sick of the over hype apple craze, yes i have a iphone its good, but soon to be replaced with htc hd2 would i buy anything else such as a macbook etc no. i can buy a dell or something else for cheaper. same as the ipad i can get my self a nice netbook to do the same thing.

I'm a self confessed Apple fanboy but I must admit I'm nothing but underwhelmed by the iPad. To me it's just an oversized iPhone without the phone....and some minor features that I don't really need, and certainly wouldn't pay $600+ just so I could read eBooks comfortably.

I actually sold my iPhone 3G and purchased a Nexus One while in the USA, and I would never go back to an iPhone at this stage. Android is perfect for me, and is a nice change to the locked down interface of the iPhone. Apple would need to do some drastic changes to entice me back to an iPhone at this stage.

Which brings me to my next point, have you guys heard about the Google tablet based on the Android OS? There are a few pics floating around and a few articles, and if it's based on the phone OS I'd almost consider it. Cheaper, and being able to run Flash....you'd think it would trump the iPad!

i haven't heard anything about that as of yet, but you brought up the other thing that annoys me about the iphone, that they wont include flash in its os as its to "buggy" in apples eyes.

i have been speaking to a few it minded people and also it professionals and they all have been getting annoyed with apples software un allowing you to modify etc. just cant wait for the apple bubble to burst because i am sick of helpdesk and it support coming to me asking stupid question about apple crap.

I have the HTC Magic which runs I believe the version of android before the nexus one, yeah runs pretty well, almost identical to the iphone I have found, just a much more extensive "market" of free apps and games.
It might not run as smoothly but it sure was cheaper than an iphone

And I hear the new HTC Desire blows the iphone out of the water (in terms of smartphone capabilities).

Not too sure about the android OS on a tablet though, it seems a bit too gimmicky for my tastes.

Yeah the Magic runs Android 1.5 and the Nexus runs 2.1. I noticed a CONSIDERABLE performance boost over the HTC Magic, it's actually rather amazing! So smooth and a lot faster than a 3GS iPhone! It may lack a little on the presentation side (don't get me wrong, on the Nexus One it looks damn pretty) but the functionality runs rings around the iPhone!
