The Books Thread

So it turns out books still exist, and it occurred to me that some of you might read them occasionally, so tell us, what are you reading?

More importantly, where should I buy books from online? (real books, no e).
Currently reading through Friends of Eddie Coyle again by George Higgins, it's a great read.
I deeply recommend Have a Little Faith by Mitch Albom. It's a non-fiction book that turned me from an awful and argumentative antitheist to a pretty accepting apatheist, and I think everyone can benefit from it.

In the beginning, there was another question.
“Will you save me, Jesus?”
This man was holding a shotgun. He hid behind trash cans in front of a Brooklyn row house. It was late at night. His wife and baby daughter were crying. He watched for cars coming down his block, certain the next set of headlights would be his killers.
“Will you save me, Jesus?” he asked, trembling. “If I promise to give myself to you, will you save me tonight?”
Picture the most pious man you know. Your priest. Your pastor. Your rabbi. Your imam. Now picture him in dirty clothes, a shotgun in his hand, begging for salvation from behind a set of trash cans.
Picture the man who sends people off to heaven, begging not to be sent to hell.
“Please, Lord,” he whispered. “If I promise…”

Read Truman capote's "in Cold Blood". It's a great non fiction novel.

That's not normally the type of book I read, but I might actually try and get it, thanks!

It sounds like it's a book that shows the positive side of faith to atheists... Does it take a whole book to do that? All you need for that is a little maturity and common sense. Let people believe what they want - their beliefs don't have any impact on you, so why should you actively oppose it?

Exactly, and yes, for me it did require a whole book to pound it in. [Shifty]
ommmgg i just finished Divergent and LOVEEEDDD it!!! It's about a dystopian world that is split into several factions. You follow a girl named Tris who has to meet several trials before she can joined the Dauntless (fearless) faction.

Yup, I read that last year. Great story, and it did change my perspective on things. Tuesdays with Morrie is also a really good read.

Well, it can do. Most of the time it doesn't, but there are extreme abuses of human rights purely in the name of religion... but that's for another thread.

I never had any issue with faith on a personal level. I never really understood it until I read that book.

What's it matter if it took someone a whole book to see another side of things? Maybe maturity and common sense isn't all you need. What about exposure? Maybe some people have only seen a bad side to religion. Books are an excellent source of exposure.

But I think that if I read Have a Little Faith, I'd still feel the same way as I do now towards religion.

“Will you save me, Jesus?” he asked, trembling. “If I promise to give myself to you, will you save me tonight?”

If that man comes out well after that particular ordeal, I'd still feel that it wasn't god that saved him. Although, if that man feels he was saved, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

When I was at school (a public high school) we had scripture. It wasn't that bad but occasionally we had this buy (Broc) who was some young (early 20s) church leader and it gave me the shits everytime he came in because he'd try to convert you. And some gorups friends took me to, they'd try to convert you. There was always a common link. They had problems, mainly with drugs, and god helped them up. They was always down in the dumps. I came ot the conslusion that religion gave them some guidence. Ok, sure. Nothing wrong with that. But why do they have to try to convert school students (get 'em whle they're young) to be religious? What's it bloody matter? I also had Moron door knockers. I'm OK. It's not something I need. I have no problems if it helps you with your life but I don't need it in mine. :/

I used to say (when at school) religion is for people with no lives to tech them how to live.

I don't say that anymore. :P

Anyway, I think that book would still be a good read. A similar book Religion for Atheists: A Non-Believer's Guide to the Uses of Religion by Alain de Botton might be good for others.

I really enjoyed reading The Color of Water when I just finished school. Yeah, it's American, hence the colour spelling.
Just bought the new book in the Karin Slaughter series [Derp]
Yay, I am glad others have enjoyed Mitch Albom's works.

I also love books about seemingly simple topics. Mark Kurlansky wrote a book called Salt, tracing the human history of salt. Same thing with his book Cod. There's others about milk and corn and The Evolution of Useful Things.
Currently reading the third game of thrones book. Started the series about a month ago, can't put it down [Rage].
I'm reading the dirk pitt series by clive cussler, I'm up to the 17th book out of 22 books :)
Wow, a 22 book series? Clive Cussler really seems to churn them out. GRRM I hope you are listening...
I just bought "The last victim" by Jason Moss

Cod was great, I should read the rest.

Currently reading the complete collection of the brothers Grimm. Not all kids stories
Recently finished reading Metro 2033 by Dmitry Glukhovsky, it was a more substantial read than I though it was going to be... I found the theme's and questions he asks of the human race were thought provoking for me... Definitely worth a read.

Krycek said: Wow, a 22 book series? Clive Cussler really seems to churn them out. GRRM I hope you are listening...

he started writing them back in 1975
Comics have invaded my book reading time now, but next novel I'm attacking is A Clockwork Orange. Love the movie, can't wait to read the book.

Last book I finished was American Psycho, god damn that was messed up!
Reading Drive by James Sallis. Took me a while to get into it but I'm enjoying it now. The film is a totally different experience.
