- Huge Battlefield 3 update hits PS3 today
- PC update held back by console manufacturer's requirements
- Xbox 360 and PC update arriving in the next few weeks
Remember that Battlefield 3 patch that will fix all the things? PlayStation 3 gamers will be receiving the patch today, but PC gamers will have to wait a little longer. "But why, there are no certification processes to deal with on the PC platform?" I hear you ask. Consoles are to blame according to DICE executive producer Patrick Bach.
During an interview with PC Gamer, Bach stated that the patch was being delivered in one big lump to fulfill console manufacturer's requirements, rather than smaller, incremental updates that PC gamers are more accustomed to. Bach expressed that while the process was a little frustrating, it also has the benefit of allowing DICE to thoroughly test the update, and tweak it for a better gameplay experience.
We have had problems with patching in things like Battlefield 2 where you had to patch the patch because the patch screwed it up and then you have to apply a patch to the patch to the patch. And that’s, from a player perspective, that’s not a great experience – “Oh is this the 6.8 patch or the 6.9? Because the 6.8 broke the game and now you need to unbreak it!” So getting focus and testing and all those things is actually a positive.” - Patrick Bach, DICE
With Sony having an exclusive leg-up on all Battlefield 3 content thanks to an exclusivity deal, Xbox 360 and PC gamers will be waiting an extra week or two before the patch arrives on their systems.
