Battlefield 3 Premium confirmed, $80 AUD

by Stephen Heller Featured 19 Comments 20 Votes 970 Views 31/05/2012 Back to News

Battlefield 3's premium service has just been confirmed, with a $79.99 price tag for Australian gamers.

The European PlayStation Blog were the first to leak pricing information, along with a launch date on June 4. Coincidentally the first DLC pack, Close Quarters, is also set to launch on June 4 at a cool $23.95.

Then the very official looking fact sheet placed below appeared from some German sources, outlining exactly what you get for your hard earned cash.

If you want the long and the short of it, you'll received access to all five DLC expansion packs two weeks early, along with "a host of unique in-game items not available anywhere else."

You will also have access to "powerful new features," which include the ability to reset stats, queue priority into servers and more. Sounds like those who pay will have a far better BF3 experience than the rest of us plebs.

EA told Joystiq the following, which means that the announcement is legit:

Looks like the excitement for Battlefield Premium cannot be contained. For details, please visit Battlefield.com on June 4."

How do you feel about DICE launching a premium service?

Apparently this launches June 4. Apparently, Close Quarters will launch June 4. Apparently, BF3 Premium gives you two weeks early access to DLC, starting with Close Quarters.

I'm confused.
Kind of surprised their doing it with BF3 DLC.

Who is going to pay $80 to subscribe to a year old game?

Should have waited for the next Battlefield.

Thats abit daft!

So ur judging a games popularity on the bases that its a year old!
For example look at all them lame a*s COD games that are heavly outdated, they still have a strong player base, And so does battlefield.

Might not be appealing for casual gamers but for us more dedicated players the option to subscribe to a game for extra/exclusive features is a hands day day one purchase!
Why didn't they offer this when the game released? Everyone already has back to karkand (most got it for free) and the 2 week early release will only come into play for the last 3 expansions. To make this worthwhile it should be $60-$70 AU

But there's been no need to subscribe for the past year. Why are people going to do it now?

It's like all the newspaper sites trying to make you pay now. More people would be fine with it if they did it years ago when they launched, but it's been free up until now, so why should we pay?

Well it hasnt be available for the past yr, only now!
And if it had been available earlier then "i know for myself" i'd purchased it straight away, They had just recently came out with the Rent-a-Server and look how popular that is, So popular that 90% of the servers are player rented, And thats 1yr later!
Plus with the new packs coming out i'd much rather pay the $80 now rather than paying about $20 per map when they eventually release over the next 6months or so, Also seem we get exclusive in-game content =D And being able to play the maps early and probaly some other neat features.

Also its not mandatory, Same like PlayStation Plus is not mandatory, But they give people the "Option" which is mostly aimed more towards us dedicated BF3 fans or just people with deep pockets a chance to become a premium member and in return get extra features ect ect...

And you making it sound like YOU HAVE TO BUY PREMIUM MEMBERSHIP! And if you dont then you going to be at a disadvantage to those who do, If you dont buy it then fine its not going to change ur gameplay or experience at all, Just means you wont get the maps early and whatever that in-game content is.

I'd atleast expect you understand the concept of "Premium Based Membership" :S
It's a major issue because in the lead up to the release of MW3 and BF3, EA were screaming from the high heavens how WE HAVE BATTLELOG AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAY FOR IT, UNLIKE COD ELITE.

Six months later they are launching this. Hypocritical much? Plus it will change your experience - jumping into a highly populated server means that those who pay will be ushered in first while you sit there waiting like a chump.
@W84NO1 I'm not saying that it's mandatory or that they shouldn't do it, it's just a weird time.

A premium membership is the type of thing that should be launched with a game. A year is a long time in video games, and besides a few select few titles, the masses have largely moved on to something else by then.

Just seems strange that they didn't want to do it at launch, but are happy to do it now.

No not at all!!

BattleLog and all its features is still free and will remain free!
It would be Hypocritical if they all of a sudden made it you had to subcribe to the Premium service in-order to continue to use BattleLog but thats not the case, BattleLog and this new Premium thingy are both different features, So i dont know how you can call EA Hypocritical...

Plus it will change your experience - jumping into a highly populated server means that those who pay will be ushered in first while you sit there waiting like a chump.

Well.. Not dramatically to the point that you no longer want to play the game, Its just means you dont have to wait that initial 2-5mins to join a populated room which most people allready had to do, So for those who dont pay it makes no difference other than knowing someone just jumped the Q :P
And for myself i really only play in the server my friends and myself have rented "which gets highly populated" and afew regular servers which i have been added to the VIP list, Means i already get priority over none VIP listed players, And on my own server if i caint join bcoz its full then i just boot someone out, Yes its abit unfair but i paid for that right! :P
Which is to play on my server when i want how i want with out restrictions!

Yes this is true and i do agree that it should of been an option from the start and along with the Rent-a-Server, Whyh they wait all this time to start implementing new features is beyond me.. :S
But on the other hand, It does keep the game fresh if over time new features/maps are being added rather then all in one big clump, Not only does this rationing out bring players back to the game but it also means that EA/DICE still have interest in the title and are tryn to keep us happy by offer new stuff here and thr.

[qoute]A year is a long time in video games, and besides a few select few titles, the masses have largely moved on to something else by then.[/qoute]
Yes 1yr is a fair while in video game land but when ur enjoying a game it also seems to go by very quickly!!
And with a all AAA titles espcially FPS's thiers always going to be a very large and dedicated community, regardless of what other games come out we are allways going to come back to "in this case" BF3, I'd have to say Atleast 60% of the time i'm playing BF3 which is Alot considering i own (PS3)61 Disc games and 240+ Digital games ^_^

And thrs about 20+ people on my PSN Friends list that are as dedicated as myself.
In a realistic world it would be great if the Premium content "which in my mind is just a giant Map-Pack that comes with bonus stuff/abilities" would be Free or atleast given Free to PlayStation Plus members but its not, But it is for a game i really enjoy and have invested hundreds of hours in and have been following the series since PS2 Online dayz [MOG]
So for me if thrs content/features av
You do know what hypocritical means right?

"Hey guys, don't listen to Activision. We're offering the same features as Battlelog and we won't charge you a cent for in-game features or bonuses."

Six months later

"Hey guys, give us $80 and we'll give you a bunch of exclusive in-game items, and access to content earlier than the rest,"

Sounds pretty hypocritical to me?
I love you BF3, but I don't $80 love you.

Heller said: You do know what hypocritical means right?

Hmmm no i dont think i know this meaning you speak of.. Let me Google it and i'll get back to you!

Still not convincing me bucko... -_-

The $80 pretty much covers the cost of all the Map-Packs that are coming out.
So pretty much if u buy this premium thingy you pretty much paid for the maps upfront and get this extra stuff also.

So a smart person would pay now rather than loosing afew dollars n worry about it everytime they release a pack then in the end have less features than what u would of if you had just handed that money over now!
...does it come with the game???...

If this premium service is $100 instead of $80 I still buy it because It's Battlefield 3 [MOG]
another 80 on top of what Ive already payed ? HAHAHAHA pushing shit up hill if they think this customer is still going to be a customer.

Stupid people (like me) will still pay it. [Derp]
I was considering buying this game again, but definitely not now since if you really want the most out of the game you need to get this.

So I will just skip this game now and wait for Far Cry 3.
What a joke.
I'm going to buy it. I already have the first DLC too.

Though I'm not a big fan of these extended DLC services, anyone should be able to buy the camo, tags and stat stuff in a separate DLC pack without having to opt in for an all-in-one package. Luckily they aren't leverage items, just bells and whistles.
