Black Ops 2 developer responds to campaign criticisms

Black Ops 2's new Strikeforce missions will "levy" criticisms aimed at the Call of Duty series's apparent single-player "linearity", according to Treyarch director of communications, John Rafacz.

The Strikeforce missions give the player controller over units and droids around the game world, working in tandem with the game's story and affecting the campaign based on player actions. Treyarch says scenes towards the end of the game will be based depending on success or failure during these missions.

Mr Rafacz says these levels will "speak to anyone that might levy that criticism against the single-player campaign," but that the developer has kept the "ride" that gamers are used to with Call of Duty games.

"At the same time, we’ve also found a new way to help craft the fiction that surrounds that story with Strikeforce levels. It adds a sense of non-linearity, and for some of those that may only play single-player, it also adds elements of gameplay that might feel a little bit like multi-player in some respects."

The game's "sandbox", as Mr Rafacz explains, includes objectives that give gamers the freedom to "play with all the toys" in "a meaningful way that does impact the story".

"I think it’s really important to have the right expectations - we’ll all share the core single-player experience, but the success or failure that you encounter in these additional levels will ultimately shape the geo-political fiction that wraps the conclusion of your game."

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is scheduled for release this November. Check out our E3 preview here.

To be fair, the only campaign I enjoyed since CoD4 was Black Ops, but when I think back to Blops all I remember is 'tell me the numbers Mason!' *facepalm*

The strikeforce missions look good, but it's nothing new in terms of games. Refreshing for CoD fans at least I suppose.
CoD 2 campaign is my favorite, My second is World at War because not many WWII FPS are set in the Pacific Theatre it's always in the Western front.

For once i'll agree :P The WaW campaign was pretty awesome. My favorite out of all, to be honest.
CoD2 was great. WaW was alright, and tbh I completely forgot about it. They're all too similar in how they play out though. In CoD4, the set pieces such as the nuke going off were mindblowing, but in MW3 when things like that happened, I was left with a resounding 'meh' feeling.
COD reflex (COD 4) campaign is my favorite, My second is COD MW3 and my least favorite has to be world at war i just found the story line to be boring and i think the other reason is because how crappy the controls were because it was the first cod to be on the wii.
I have a word to say that "awesome"
