Borderlands 2 will be "gianter" when compared to its predecessor, according to the game's developer, Gearbox.
Gearbox vice president, Steve Gibson, said that, while "the last one was giant", fans can expect Borderlands 2 to last "20 to 30 hours" if they don't play the side missions. "If you do side missions, you're looking to get close to doubling that," said Mr Gibson.
As for the game's story, there will be "six to seven times as much" dialogue, and you won't need to have played Borderlands or its downloadable content to understand what's happening.
"When you guys play the full Borderlands 2, we worked really hard to reintroduce all of the characters," explained Mr Gibson. "It's a standalone game. But if you did play the first one, you will certainly see a lot of things that would be even funnier to you."
Borderlands launched in 2009 and is still one of the more ambitious games to be released this generation. A first-person RPG shooter, the game went on to be a critical and commercial success.
"The way we felt was that three years ago, when we did Borderlands, we stuck our neck out pretty far," Mr Gibson recalled. "We did what was seen as a bizarre blending of genres, a bizarre art style and a bizarre sense of humour."
The initial belief was that a sequel could be released within a year of the original, but that obviously wasn't to be.
"That was the decision at Gearbox. People loved the game and rewarded us by purchasing the game.
"We didn't just want to do a wimpy sequel. We wanted to do a full, ambitious, giant sequel, and part of that is the new feeling of experience, and that happens with new character classes."
Borderlands 2 will be released on September 21 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
