Crytek's future games will be free-to-play, console focus apparent

Warface, the free-to-play shooter from graphical wizards Crytek may have been their first foray into the F2P arena, but it certainly won't be their last.

Speaking to Videogamer recently, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli says that the company is planning to leave retail behind completely.

Right now we are in the transitional phase of our company, transitioning from packaged goods games into an entirely free-to-play experience.

What this entails is that our future, all the new games that we’re working on, as well new projects, new platforms and technologies, are designed around free-to-play and online, with the highest quality development.” - Cevat Yerli, Crytek

Of course this won't translate to the upcoming Crysis 3 which will still be a retail product, the future however is largely unknown at this point.

Cevat did provide another statement, one that will have PC gamers groaning with anquish.

As is evident in Warface, our approach is to ensure the best quality, console game quality…”

So there you have it. Say goodbye to the former PC studio we once knew and love as we usher in another console-focused dev team.

That's the way it's going it seems.

Hopefully it doesn't reign in lots of cheap games that need buy-ups and in-game purchases to make the experience worthwhile.
Sorry man, already beat you to it a while back: 360.mmgn.com/... :P
You can see it now, you have finished level one to go to level 2 you need to pay $14.99 and you will need grenades at a cost of .99c each lol. .1c a bullet :P

Would suck to be a scavenge/survival game developer.
Well they have to make money somehow if they are developing multi million dollar games.
Yea, and I already made all the reasonable arguments on the other page.

But while I'm at it, why are they going F2P again? He acts as if, now that CoD and Battlefield do it, retail+DLC is the only way to make money. He's all, "retail doesn't work anymore, F2P is good for consumers", but good publishers stay away from constant DLC. It shows how bad the management is at that company; it's either they play by rules they hate completely (and can avoid completely), or they forgo that business model and go for another, completely untested model (untested for Crytek at least) that has never upheld such high-development-cost games before. [Facepalm]

I see either major layoffs, or an entirely new management in the next year or so for Crytek. :E
